Background

The Philippine health sector, under


the leadership of the DOH, celebrates
Generics Awareness Month every
September to commemorate the
passing into law of RA No. 6675, or
the “Generics Act of 1988,” and to
promote the use of generics by the
general public.

• To promote, encourage and require the use of


generic terminology

• To ensure the adequate supply of drugs with


generic names

• To encourage the extensive use of drugs with


generic names

• Mandatory generic labeling

• Generics prescription policy – strict generics


prescribing in the public and private sector

• Generics dispensing and substitution


in pharmacies (therapeutic substitution not allowed)

branded products or innovator drugs and not
covered by patent protection.

• Refers to the first drug that was created

by the Department of Health?

Generics presence in the pharmaceutical
market have been increasing over the years.
In terms of value, 41% were from the sale of
originator products, 54% from branded
generics and 5% from unbranded generics.
