Automatic Identification System

• AIS is a VHF radio system which transmits and receives


navigational information, in real time, from other ships and/or
from shore stations
– Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI)
– Ships Name, Call Sign
– Course, Heading, Speed
– Destination, Cargo

• International Maritime Organization


(IMO) Regulation 19 required AIS on:
– All Passenger and ships 300+ GT
on International Voyages
– Cargo Ships 500+ not on International
Voyages
– Ships constructed on or after 1 JUL 02
– Ships not on International Voyages
and built before 1 JUL 02
(required by 1 JUL 07)

• Provides Shipboard SA
• Merchant ships currently equipped
by law (over 300 Tons)

• Unclassified network of AIS Data


• MSSIS servers located in Massachusetts and Italy
