TRANSPORT
AND
CIRCULATION
• Also known as the cardiovascular system.
• Consists of the organs and fluids that
transport materials across the body.
• All vertebrates, including humans, have a
closed circulatory system.
THE HUMAN
HEART
• The human heart is
approximately the size of a
closed fist.
• Located in the pericardial cavity.
HEART
• Its outer surface is lined by the visceral
pericardium (epicardium).
• This organ generates blood pressure and is
LEFT responsible for regulating blood supply to
ATRIA tissues.
RIGHT • Consists of four chambers: the right and
ATRIA left atria, and the right and left ventricles.

RIGHT VENTRICLES
RIGHT LEFT
ATRIA
Atria of the heart receive blood from the ATRIA
veins.
The atria function primarily as
reservoirs, where the blood 13 returning LEFT VENTRI
from veins is collected before it enters
the ventricles. RIGHT VENTRICLES
LEFT
T ATRIA The right atrium collects deoxygenated blood
from the superior vena cava and inferior vena
A cava while the left atrium receives oxygenated
om the
blood from the pulmonary vein.
The two atria are separated from each other by
a partition called interatrial septum.

the ventricles.
The right ventricle pumps blood into the
pulmonary trunk, which then pumps the
blood into the aorta. The ventricles are
separated from each other by the muscular
interventricular septum.
Ventricles
• Major pumping chambers.
