Designed by Milton Glaser for the New York State Department of
Commerce, X is a classic mark that has fronted T-shirts and bumper
stickers since 1977. The “X” logo design is so ubiquitous that many
believe it resides squarely in the public domain but that is not the
case.
Today, the New York State Empire State Development (ESD), New
York’s chief economic development agency, holds the trademark to
the “X” logo, and licenses its use. According to a 2011 British
Telegraph newspaper article, official merchandise, such as t-shirts
and mugs emblazoned with Glaser’s design, generates more than
$30 million a year, and the ESD receives a significant portion of the
profits.

Q.4
X’s logo from the 1950’s nicknamed ‘The Meatball’ was simplified by designers Richard
Danne and Bruce Blackburn into ‘The Worm’.

Danne said, “The meatball was complicated, hard to reproduce, and laden with “Buck
Rogers” imagery. Clearly it was born out of the classic Airman Syndrome where hype and
fantasy dominated over logic and reality. Our logotype (The Worm) was quite the
opposite: it was clean, progressive, could be read from a mile away, and was easy to use
in all mediums.”

However, in 1992, The Worm was replaced as The Meatball was brought back as X’s logo
- to which Danne reacted, “The only vindication for Bruce and I, is that designers and
journalists around the world continue to campaign and keep our program alive. And the
logo is still out there…floating. If nothing else, it’s a feel good thing. ”

X’s iconic and enduring mascot, Y, was created by X’s art director Arthur ‘Art’

A running joke in X’s publication involves hiding the logo somewhere in the

"humorous sexual connotation", and because the image was "frisky and
playful".

X started the program Z which is named so based on a pun/play on the mascot
