CELL AND TISSUES

KIPS VIRTUAL
CELL

Definition
• The smallest structural and functional unit of organism is
called as cell .

• smallest and basic unit of life that is responsible for all life
processes.
Deforestation

Examples
• Conversion of forestland to farms

• Ranches

• Urban use.

• Pakistan is facing real deforestation crisis as excessive

wood is being used for fuel purposes or for wood
furnishing in the country.
Deforestation

Damaging Effects of Deforestation

a) The carbon cycle

• Forests act as a major carbon store because carbon dioxide
is taken up from the atmosphere and used in
photosynthesis.

• When forests are cleared it leads to an increase in the

atmospheric CO2 concentration.

• CO2 Is the major contributor to the greenhouse effect.

Deforestation

(b) The Water Cycle

• Trees draw ground water up through their roots and release
it into the atmosphere (transpiration).

• With removal of trees the region cannot hold as much

water.

• The effect of this could be a drier climate.

Deforestation

(c) Soil Erosion

• With the loss of a protective cover of vegetation more soil
is lost.

• Silting of water courses, lakes and dams occurs as a result

of soil erosion.
Deforestation

(d) Extinction of Species

• Forests contain more than half of all species on our planet
as the habitat of these species is destroyed, so the number
of species declines.
Deforestation

(e) Flooding
• Silting of river due to deforestation causes flooding.
Deforestation

(f) Desertification
• The destruction of land leading to desert like conditions is
called desertification.

• The causes of desertification are complex, but

deforestation is one of the contributing factors.
