IMPORTANCE OF MONITORING THE STRCUTURES
Monitoring is the process of observing and collecting data on a system or process over time. It is
important for a variety of reasons, including:

• To identify problems early: By monitoring a system or process on a regular basis, it is

possible to identify any potential problems early on.

• To improve performance: Monitoring data can be used to identify areas where performance
can be improved. This information can then be used to make changes to the system or process
to improve its performance.

• To make important decisions: Monitoring data informs important decisions about a system
or process, such as replacing a failing component.

TYPES OF MONITORING
• Structural response monitoring: This type of monitoring involves measuring the response
of the structure to various loads and environmental conditions. This can be done by using
sensors to measure things like vibration, strain, and displacement.
• Structural health indicators (SHI) monitoring: This type of monitoring involves using
sensors to measure specific parameters that are known to be sensitive to damage. These
parameters can include things like the temperature, humidity, and electrical resistance of the
structure's materials.
• Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring: This type of monitoring involves using sensors to
detect the release of small amounts of energy in the form of acoustic waves. These waves are
generated when the structure is damaged, and they can be used to identify the location and
severity of the damage.

TYPES OF MONITORING
Vibration monitoring: This type of monitoring involves using sensors to measure the vibration
of the structure. Changes in the vibration of the structure can be indicative of damage, as
damaged materials tend to vibrate differently than undamaged materials

PERIODIC MONITORING
Periodic monitoring is a less expensive and less complex monitoring method than continuous
monitoring. It is also easier to implement, as it does not require the installation of a continuous
monitoring system. However, periodic monitoring may not be able to detect small changes in the
structure's condition, and it may not be able to detect problems early on.

•Advantages:
• Less expensive than continuous monitoring
• Easier to implement
• Can be used to track the overall health of a structure
•Disadvantages:
• May not be able to detect small changes in the structure's condition
• May not be able to detect problems early on

CONTINOUS MONITORING
Continuous monitoring is a more expensive and more complex monitoring method than periodic
monitoring. It requires the installation of a continuous monitoring system, which can be a
significant upfront cost. However, continuous monitoring can detect small changes in the
structure's condition, and it can detect problems early on. This makes it a good option for
structures that are subjected to a lot of stress or that are critical to public safety.

•Advantages:
• Can detect small changes in the structure's condition
• Can detect problems early on
• Can be used to monitor the performance of a structure under different conditions
•Disadvantages:
• More expensive than periodic monitoring
• Can generate a lot of data that needs to be analyzed

SUMMARY
The best choice of monitoring method depends on the
specific needs of the structure. If the structure is not
subjected to a lot of stress or is not critical to public
safety, periodic monitoring may be a good option.
However, if the structure is subjected to a lot of stress or
is critical to public safety, continuous monitoring may be
a better option.
When choosing between periodic monitoring is less
expensive but continuous offers more accurate data and
early problem identification.
