Cognitive ergonomics is a field that focuses on how
human-system interaction with cognitive abilities at work
is influenced by factors like perception, attention, memory,
decision-making, and learning. It aims to improve work
conditions, human performance, safety, and health while
minimizing errors, load, and stress. It provides designers
with recommendations for usability and machine control
design.

H IS TO RY
The field of cognitive ergonomics emerged predominantly in the
70s with the advent of the personal computer and new
developments in the fields of cognitive psychology and artificial
intelligence. It investigated the relationship between particular
cognitive limits and human cognitive psychology.
H IS TO RY
Trial and error and time were the only ways to do this. Since "cognitive
ergonomics is the application of psychology to work to achieve the
optimization between people and their work," CE stands in contrast to
the tradition of physical ergonomics. As an applied science, the
techniques used to create cognitive ergonomic design have evolved over
the last 27 years in tandem with the rapid advancement of technology.
The methodological approach to design underwent a global shift in the
1980s.

Sensation and perception refer to how we interpret
information from our senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell,
touch). In contexts like construction, hearing warnings is
crucial, while in medical care, interpreting monitor
symbols is essential.

Attention is the focused processing of information, with
the ability to divide focus among multiple aspects. In a
control room, detecting changes is vital, while in a
kindergarten, a nurse may need to attend to multiple
children simultaneously.

Short-term memory, lasting up to 30 seconds, is a component
of working memory, involving mental rehearsal and
manipulation of information. For example, a laboratory
assistant recalls sample locations, and a telephone operator
rehearses a person's name until the call connects.

Long-term memory stores various types of data. Semantic memory
holds knowledge about the environment, symbols, and concepts.
Autobiographical memories relate to one's own existence, and episodic
memory involves events. Procedural knowledge pertains to abilities and
practical know-how, essential in jobs like running meetings or operating
machines safely.
