M o x i We l l n e s s S t u d i o , a w e l l n e s s s t u d i o a n d a c u p u n c t u r e c e n t e r i n S o h o ,
N e w Yo r k , t o o k t h e s k y l i g h t o f t h e 1 9 0 1 c o m m e r c i a l b u i l d i n g a s i t s
starting point and renovated the rectangular space by rearranging the
interior around a large oval skylight.
 Layout
• The new plan uses existing apertures to
arrange programs within the rectangular
layout.

• At the street-facing front, an entry door

o p e n s i n t o a l a rg e , f l e x i b l e r e c e p t i o n
area lined with four arched windows
that fill the room with light and reveal
s w e e p i n g v i e w s u p B r o a d w a y.

• To maximize space and take full

advantage of the natural light, this area
doubles as a site for gatherings and
classes.

 NATURAL
LIGHT

• A striking oval skylight informs a n e w, softly

c u r v i n g a t r i u m a t t h e s t u d i o ’s c e n t e r, f r o m w h i c h
treatment rooms radiate.

• The overflow of natural lighting within the space

brightens the colors, as well, highlighting tones of
c y p r e s s g r e e n , c o p p e r, t e r r a c o t t a a n d p e a c h .

• The application of the colour green in MOXI not

only brings nature into the space but represents the
ability to heal and create a balance between the

m i n d a n d b o d y.
• A single corridor leads to all six treatment rooms, which were also
colored in shades of green.

• Painted deep green, the color shift—from light to more saturated—

indicates a movement toward more intimate spaces: individual
treatment rooms extend from either side of the hall.

• U n i q u e l y, t h e c o r r i d o r r e m a i n s w a s h e d i n n a t u r a l l i g h t t h a n k s t o
the original skylight above that rises through its middle; this
serves as the nucleus of the space, from which all rooms radiate.
 SOCIAL INTERACTION

A t t h e s t r e e t - f a c i n g f r o n t , a n e n t r y d o o r o p e n s i n t o a l a rg e , f l e x i b l e
reception area lined with four arched windows that fill the room
w i t h l i g h t a n d r e v e a l s w e e p i n g v i e w s u p B r o a d w a y.

To m a x i m i z e s p a c e a n d t a k e f u l l a d v a n t a g e o f t h e n a t u r a l l i g h t , t h i s
area doubles as a site for gatherings and classes.

A low-slung custom bench crafted from white oak slats and copper
detailing curves along two walls.

Floating above, handmade ceramic pendants by Elsa Foulon, sourced

from France, and orb sconces, sourced from Greece, add warm layers
of light.

Other elements, like terrazzo side tables and plush seating in boucle
a n d v e l v e t , c a n b e e a s i l y m o v e d t o m a k e w a y f o r l a rg e c l a s s e s a n d
gatherings.

personalizes experience, and points to personal
transformation (from dark at the bottom to light at the
top).

• T h e g r e e n w a s o ff s e t b y h i n t s o f p a l e p e a c h t h r o u g h o u t
the interior and natural finishes including terrazzo,
concrete, boucle and ribbed glass add depth and 02/23/2024 7
texture.
• A t t h e c o r r i d o r ’s r e a r, a s e c o n d a r c h w a y o p e n s i n t o a b a c k - o f -
h o u s e z o n e , w h e r e F TA h a s i n s e r t e d a n e w o ff i c e , h e r b d i s p e n s a r y,
s t a ff p a n t r y, a n d b a t h .

• The existing kitchen was given a facelift with cabinets in a soft,

desaturated green and a shimmering, hexagon tile backsplash
whose color evokes sea mist.

• Elsewhere, pale pink accents signify good health, according to

c o l o r p s y c h o l o g y, w h i l e p a l e p e a c h o ff e r s w a r m t h a n d a s e n s e o f
calm.
