QGIS Plugins: Enhancing Your GIS

Workflow

QGIS (Quantum Geographic Information System) is a free, open-source software

that allows users to create, edit, visualize, analyze, and publish geospatial
information. There are many benefits to using QGIS. First, the software offers
many free online resources and maps available to download.
Benefits of Using Plugins
• Increased Functionality
Using plugins in QGIS allows users to enhance the functionality of the software by
adding new features and tools. Plugins can provide additional data sources, analysis
capabilities, and visualization options, expanding the range of tasks that can be
performed within QGIS.

• Improved Efficiency
Plugins can help streamline workflows and improve efficiency by automating
repetitive tasks and providing shortcuts for commonly used functions. By reducing
manual work and providing quick access to tools, plugins enable users to work more
efficiently and save time.

• Access to Advanced Geospatial Analysis Tools

Plugins in QGIS can provide access to advanced geospatial analysis tools that may not
be available in the core software. These tools can include specialized algorithms,
statistical models, and spatial analysis techniques, allowing users to perform complex
analyses and derive valuable insights from their geospatial data.
DEM PLUGIN
1. This plugin will download DEMs from OpenTopography.org for user
selected extent only

DEMs:
1. SRTM 90m
2. SRTM 30m
3. ALOS World 3D 30m
4. SRTM GL1 Ellipsoidal 30m
5. Global Bathymetry SRTM15+ V2.1
6. Copernicus Global DSM 30m
7. Copernicus Global DSM 90m
8. NASADEM Global DEM
9. Europe DTM 30m
10. GEDI L3 Grid 1km
QUICK OSM
QuickOSM is a QGIS plugin to download data from Overpass server. QuickOSM
allows you to work quickly with OSM data . Write some queries for you by
providing a key/value. Choose to run the query on an area or an extent.

1. Help to how to create map preset on this plugin.

2. Help to about add some QML in queries.
3. Fix trunk roads to Urban visualization preset .
HCMGIS
• Add global basemaps from Google, Carto, ESRI, OSM Stamen
• Batch Converter: Batch convert CSV to Point Shapefiles and other GIS formats (including
OSM pbf, GeoPackage)
• Download OpenData: Download Open Data from OSM Geofabrik, GADM, Basemaps,
Download OpenData, Batch Converter, VN-2000 Projections, Geometry Processing and
Field Calculation Utilities.

PROFILE TOOL
This tool plots profile lines from raster layers or point vector
layer with elevation field. Supports multiple lines as well as
graph export to svg, pdf, png or csv file.

Clipping Raster
Rasters are often large datasets. One way of reducing file sizes is by
clipping the raster to only the area of interest. This can be accomplished
by using the Clipper transformer and a polygon feature.

1. clip a raster layer to an extent.

2. clip raster by mask layer.
3. Extract Smaller Areas From A larger Shapefile.
4. Determine UTM Zone (LAT LON TOOL)
DSM/DEM/DTM

A DSM captures both natural and human-made features of the environment.

Whereas, as shown below, a DTM only retains features of the bare-earth terrain, such as
rivers and ridges.
The uses and applications of DEMs:

• Slope analysis
• Aspect analysis
• Delineating drainage networks
and catchments
• Identifying geologic structures
• View shed analysis
• 3D simulations
• Change analysis
• Orthorectification
• Contour mapping
What machines and technology capture information for
DEMs?
• SAR interferometry
• Stereo Photogrammetry
• LiDAR
• Digitizing contour lines
• DGPS measurements
• Ground surveying

Some key terms to keep in mind when working with elevation models are(DEM):
• Ground: the solid surface of the Earth, such as the bottom of the sea
• Height: a measurement of elevation from base to top above the ground or a recognized level
• Elevation : the height above a given level, especially that of the sea or above the horizon
• Terrain: an extent of ground, region
