Locating the edge view of

a surface by getting a point
view of an edge on the surface
Learning intentions:
• To be able to understand how a flat surface appears when looking at it
along an edge.
• To project points from both the plan and elevation to give the true
length of an edge.
• How to determine the true length of a line
• How to tell the difference between a point view and an edge view.
• Construct an edge view through a point view.
• To construct a model to help understand how flat surfaces can appear
as 2D and a line when looked at from different views vs looking at them
through a point along an edge.
Definition -Edge View of a Line:
• Edge view is a view looking at one side of a plane. Planes in edge
view are shown as lines that are the distances of the edges of the
shape.
• To get edge view you must take a view parallel to a side of a plane.
Then take another view perpendicular to the new line.
• An edge view will appear as one line when looked at through a point
on the plane.
• An edge view is seen when looking along an edge through one point
Looking at an edge through one point:
• When looking at the plane through one point it will still appear as a
line
• The point and edge you look through will show the height of the
shape perpendicularly from the edge you are looking through.
• This view does not give you the true length of the edge.
• The point you look through will represent the edge you are looking
upon.
Finding the true length of the edge:
• One can find the true length of a line if it is perpendicular to the X-Y axis
in both the plan and elevation.
• The true length can also be found by using the rebatement method, this
means that the line must be projected up from plan and intersected
from the lines in elevation.
• The true length of a line will not always be needed to answer the
question. However, if it is we must be aware that the edge line we look
along is not always the true length that we need.
• Construction work to find the true length and finding the edge view
should be done on separate sides of the question to maintain neatness.
Question 1: Locating the
edge view of a surface by
getting a point view of an
edge on the surface.
• Draw the plan & elevation of the flat
object using the coordinates and by
projecting the points from plan and
elevation find the edge view of the
object through a point.
• Coordinates

• Point = X Axis – Y Axis – Z Axis

• A = 50 - 50 - 0

• B = 100 - 100 - 15

• C = 150 - 50 - 0

flat object using the coordinates
and by projecting the points from
plan and elevation find the edge
view of the object through a
