Downhole Unit Installation & Pulling Overview

Educational Development Center

SPH Chapter 20
Considerations

 This presentation is meant to be an overview only

 This presentation is not meant to replace manufacturer’s

approved procedures for installation and pulling of submersible
pumping systems

 Slight deviations in the following procedure can and do occur due

to equipment &/or well site variations
Guidelines / Content

 HS&E
 Proper Tooling
 Pre-installation Checks
 Installation
 Commissioning
 Pulling

SPH Chapter 20
Health & Safety

 Installation crews must comply with all BHI and

operator HS&E directives

 Correctly designed and certified tooling should be

used to install & pull the system

 Proper lifting procedures should be used so as not

to damage the equipment or risk the safety of the
installation crew

 At any time if a condition exists that would

compromise the health and safety of the crew, the
job should be stopped and the condition
addressed before continuing

SPH 191
Proper Tooling

 All tools used should be of the proper design and in

good working order
 Use properly designed and certified lifting clamps
and slings
 Meters should be in good condition and regularly
calibrated to insure accuracy

Running In Hole

 Run rate should be steady, but allow time for cable

banding / clamping

 If a field cable splice is required, the process should

be done per manufacturer’s specifications using
proper components

 Electrical readings should be taken periodically to

insure insulation integrity

 Care should be taken not to damage the cable in

the slips

SPH 195
Commissioning & Start-up

 Final electrical connection of the downhole cable

should be done at the junction box

 Motor controller protection (voltage and current)

should be set per manufacturer’s recommendation

 High & low current settings may have to be disabled

during startup but current should be monitored at all
times

 Under and over current protection should be reset

after unit stabilizes

SPH 198
Pulling

 A unit that has shut down and does not restart

should be analyzed at the surface to determine if the
problem can be linked to a downhole equipment
failure or surface condition
 If the downhole unit has failed, pulling of the unit
should be done with the same care and attention
that is given to the installation
 Valuable information can be collected during the
pulling operation that could be used when the
equipment is analyzed after the pull

SPH 198
Pulling Report

 Data recorded on the pulling report should include …

– Electrical readings of cable & motor
– Any holes in tubing
– Condition of equipment outer surfaces and cable
armor
– Debris in pump discharge or intake
– Pump, Seal, and Motor shaft rotation and play
– Condition of oil in seal section & motor
