Statement of
Opinion or
Assertion
ENGLISH 10
OBJECTIV
ES
a.) recognize opinion and assertion;
b.) identify opinion and assertion based
on the given statements and;
c.) construct a statement of opinion and
assertion.
Opinion - is a personal belief or
judgment about something. It
reflects an individual's feelings,
thoughts, or perspective on a
particular topic, issue, or
situation.
Examples:
• “In my opinion, chocolate ice
cream is the best flavor."
• "I think going to the beach is
the most enjoyable way to
spend a summer day."
Assertion - is a statement used to
make a declaration or to express
strong belief on a particular
topic, often without evidence. Its
purpose is to express ideas or
feelings directly.
Assertion-when someone makes a statement
investing his strong belief in it, as if it is true, though it
may not be, he is making an assertion.
Assertion is a stylistic approach or technique involving
a strong declaration, a forceful or confident and positive
statement regarding a belief or a fact. Often, it is without
proof or any support. Its purpose is to express ideas or
feelings directly.
Examples:
• "It is essential for students to
develop effective time
management skills to succeed
academically."
• "Social media plays a pivotal
role in shaping public opinion
on various issues."
TYPES
OF
ASSERTIO
1. Basic Assertion – it is a
simple and straightforward
statement for expressing
feelings, opinions, and beliefs.
Examples:
1. “I wish I could have expressed this idea
earlier, because now someone else has
taken the credit.”

2. “Excuse me, first I want to finish my work,

 then I shall go with you.”
2. Emphatic Assertion – it conveys
sympathy to someone, and usually has
two parts: the first encompasses
recognition of the feelings or situations of
the other person, and the second is a
statement that shows support for the other
person’s viewpoint, feelings, or rights.
Examples:
• "I know this is making you angry,
but I really need you to hear me out."
• "I know that you are busy, and I want
to feel that our relationship is
important to you. I want you to make
time for me and for us.
3. Escalating Assertion – is a way of speaking up
when you need to get your point across more strongly. It

occurs when someone is not able to give a response

to a person’s basic assertions, and therefore that

person becomes firm about him or her.

Examples:
• "If you do not finish this work
by 6:00 tonight, I will engage
the services of another
worker."
Examples:
• "I've asked nicely for your help with
the project multiple times, but it's
important that everyone does their part.
If we don't work together as a team, we
won't finish on time, and our grades
will suffer. Please, I need you to start
contributing now."
4. I-Language Assertion - is a way of
expressing your thoughts and feelings
by starting your sentences with ‘I’.
This type of assertion is recommended
if someone wants to express negative
feelings and opinion.
Examples:
• "I felt a bit upset when I saw my
book was missing because it's a
special book to me."
• "I'm finding it hard to concentrate
when there's a lot of noise because
I want to do well on this test."
Examples:
1. “When you speak harshly, I cannot work with you

because I feel annoyed. Therefore, I want you to

speak nicely and then assign me a task.”

2. “When I don’t get enough sleep, it affects my

nerves and I feel irritated. Therefore, I try to go to

bed earlier.”
