An introduction to prepositions of time and place.

 What is a preposition?
 Prepositions link words and phrases within sentences.
 There are more than 100 prepositions in English.
 We use many prepositions to talk about where somebody or
something is – their place or position.
 We also use prepositions to talk about time.

Prepositions of time tell you when something is.

Something can happen at a specific time, for example:


…at nine o’clock. …at half-past eight. …at lunchtime… at dinner time.

Something can happen on a specific day or date, for example:


…on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc.
…on the 4th of July, the 31st of October, etc.
…on the last day of the month. …on the first day of summer.

Something can happen in a period of time, for example:


…in 2001. …in May, June, July etc.
…in the morning, afternoon, evening, etc.
…in the summer, the spring, the winter etc.

Prepositions of place tell you where something is.

Something can be near or at a place, for example:


She is standing at the bus stop. We are at the table. They are at school.

Something can be on the surface of something, for example:


The pen is on the table. You are sat on a chair. The picture is on the wall.

Something can be inside a place (or thing), for example:


We are in a classroom. The classroom is in a building. We are in a city.
