FUTURE TENSES

revision of basic future tenses


There are different ways of expressing the
future tense:

 Present simple
 Present continuous
 Be going to
 Will/won’t
Used for timetables:

o The train leaves at 5.


o The film starts at 8.

Form: remember to write –s for third


person singular (he, she, it).

PRESENT SIMPLE
Used for arrangements or fixed plans. Things
you would write down in your diary because
they are important.

o I’m meeting my daughter’s teacher at 7.


(appointment)
o I’m going to the dentist at 3. (appointment)
o I’m getting married in June. (I’ve got the
fiancé, the date, the restaurant, the dress…)
o I’m flying to Tokyo tomorrow. (I’ve got the
ticket)

PRESENT CONTINUOUS
Used for intentions, things which are not
organized.
o I’m going to visit my aunt next weekend.
o We are going to watch a film tonight but we still
don’t know which one.

Used for evidences:


o It’s going to rain. Look at those black clouds.
o He’s going to fall down.

FORM: AM/IS/ARE + GOING TO


+ INFINITIVE

(BE) GOING TO
Used for predictions, promises, instant
decisions and offers.

o I think Sara will fail the exam.(prediction)


o I’ll always love you. (promise)
o I’m cold so I’ll have a hot chocolate.
(instant decision)
o That suitcase looks heave. I’ll carry it for
you. (offer)

WILL/WON’T + INFINITIVE
WE CAN ALSO USE SHALL FOR OFFERS BUT
JUST IN QUESTIONS.

Shall I carry the suitcase for you?


Shall I make you a cup of tea?
Shall I close the window?
Shall we dance?

ALWAYS FIRST PERSON
