All about Mumbai

Presentation by Tanishka, Arshiya, Anaya and Dea

Population
Mumbai is a densely populated city located on India’s west coast. According to
UN, Mumbai is the second-most populous city in India after Delhi and eighth-
most populous city in the world with a population of approximately 20 million.
Mumbai's 2023 population is now estimated at 27,342,820. In 1950, the
population of Mumbai was 3,088,811. Mumbai has grown by 562,956 in the last
year, which represents a 2.1% annual change.

POPULATION DENSITY
The population density of Mumbai is approximately 73,000 per square mile,
which makes Mumbai one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
Because land is at such a premium, residents of Mumbai frequently live in cheap,
cramped housing far from work, leading to long commutes on the city’s busy
mass transit system.
Population
POPULATION GROWTH
Mumbai has experienced rapid growth over the past twenty years, which has led to an
increased number of residents living in slums and has elevated the growth of its largest
slum, Dharavi. The Malad-Dahisar region in the west and the Cembur-Govandi region in
the east have grown the fastest, growing between 17 and 20% in the last 10 decades.
The north is growing much more populous as the southern regions become less
inhabited, and the fast-growing areas are seeing massive ghettoization as the fastest
growth is occurring in the poorest areas.
The Indian government is currently working to boost the population of the Parsi
community, as they have the highest literacy rates and gender ratio in India, but their
numbers are rapidly declining. Out of 1.2 billion people in India, only 69,000 are Parsis,
and their numbers have been declining 12% a decade. Mumbai is still home to the largest
Parsis population in the world.
By 2030, Mumbai will have an estimated population of 28 million. 😨
These estimates mean that the 6th most populous city in the world would move up the
list to become the 4th most populous.
The PROS of living in Mumbai
Being one of the major cities of the world, Mumbai has many advantages, some of
which include:-
• There are millions of jobs available in the city, thus being referred to as the
“Financial capital of India”.
• The environment of the city is very happening. You get the opportunity to learn,
earn and grow. The work culture and the living environment are very good and
positive.

combination of tradition, religions, cuisines, music and fine arts.
• Mumbai has endless entertainment opportunities right from diverse cuisines to the

The CONS of living in Mumbai
As it is said, every coin has two sides, here are some of the cons attached to the
city:-
• Traffic Congestion. Traffic congestion affects travel costs, travel time, mobility,
accessibility, and productivity, and also impacts the environment such as air
pollution and global warming.
• Pollution. Environmental experts say the resumption of construction activities
(metro, roadworks, buildings), besides changes in wind speed, and increased
vehicular emissions, among other factors, have led to rising pollution levels in the
city
• Poor Sanitation: This can cause the spread of various waterborne/airborne
diseases.
• Overpopulation. The major problem in Mumbai is the growth of settlements such
as SLUMS. These slums come with many issues for people including the lack of
planned access to clean water and sanitation systems, poor health, lack
of education, unemployment and the prospect of crime.

• The population of Mumbai is estimated to be around 12.4 million, with a majority of the
population being employed. This is due to the fact that Mumbai is home to numerous
industries; manufacturing, production, IT etc
• There are some of the biggest financial institutions, which provide employment opportunities.

high.
• According to the last census, the unemployment rate in the city was at 8.3%. This is much

1) Gateway of India:
The Gateway of India is an arch monument built during the 20 th century in Mumbai,
India. It indisputably remains one of Mumbai’s most iconic monuments. Its construction
began in 1911 and was completed in 13 years. Built in the Indo-Saracenic style of
architecture, this beautiful honey-colored basalt stone monument stands tall with
fascinating, intricate latticework. The monument was created to commemorate the
landing of King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder on their visit to India.

2) Town Hall:
Mumbai's Town Hall is one of the most regal and sophisticated
heritage structures in the city, built in the 1800s. It was designed by
Colonel Thomas Cowper. It draws inspiration from Roman and Greek
architectural styles.
The Town Hall houses a public state library called the Asiatic Society of
Mumbai, and its museum is no less than a rich and priceless treasure
house of literature, oriental arts and sciences. It contains several
historic Asian and European books, thousands of ancient coins
including a gold 'mohur' belonging to Akbar, Dante's first issue
of Inferno, and various other rare treasures of India.

Rajabai Clock Tower:
The Rajabai Clock Tower was built in 1865 and is a gift by David Sassoon to the
designs of Scott, McClelland & Co. This spectacular Gothic-style monument is
constructed in Porbandar stone with Minton tile panels and Blashfield's
terracotta dressings from Lincolnshire. At the base of the tower is a drinking
fountain, and its four prominent faces representing morning, evening, afternoon
and night.

August Kranti Maidan:

Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan is one of the most significant
historic chapters in India’s journey of the independence struggle.
This is where Mahatma Gandhi commanded the British to leave
India on August 8, 1942, marking the launch of the Quit India

was later renamed as August Kranti Maidan to symbolize this historic

FUN FACTS!
Initially, Mumbai was made up of 7 different islands – Colaba, Mazagaon, Little Colaba, Parel,
Mahim, Isle of Bombay, and Worli. However, between the years of 1784 and 1845, British
engineers brought all these 7 islands together and thereby unified it to be one large landmass.
Mumbai was previously called Bombay. Well, when the Portuguese owned the islands of
Mumbai, they named it ‘Bom Bhaia’. This Portuguese stands for ‘good bay’. It also reflects the
fact that Mumbai was the beautiful bay area.
Every year between the months of October – March you can see swamps of flamingos
migrating in the Bhandup and Sewri regions of Mumbai. This attracts a lot of people and
