An approach is a set of assumptions, beliefs about language and language learning.

A method is a plan for systematic presentation of language. It shows the way we want
to teach language, how we select and arrange the content to teach, the teacher’s roles,
the learners’ roles. A method is an application of an approach in the context of
language teaching.

A technique is a tactic, a strategy, a procedure to execute a method. It concerns what


happens during the class time.
EXAMPLES
The Structural View of Language is an approach. It holds that language is a system of
structurally related elements, so the target of language learning is to master these
elements.

Audiolingual is a method that is underpinned by the Structural View of Language.

Drill is a technique commonly used in Audiolingual Method. With this technique,


students repeat a phrase/sentence again and again until they reach the satisfactory
level of accuracy.
