SCIENCE
INTRODUCTION: How Are Rocks Formed?
Rock formations are created millions of
years of weathering and erosion by the
elements such as heat, wind, rain and
occasional volcano. Our planet is chock full of
beautiful and bizarre rock formation.
WHAT IS A ROCK?
A rock is a natural
substance composed of
solid crystals of different
minerals that have been
fused together into a solid
lump. The minerals may
or may not have been
formed at the same time.
THREE KINDS OF ROCK
1. Igneous Rock
2. Sedimentary Rock
3. Metamorphic Rock
1. Igneous Rock
Igneous rocks (from
the Latin word for
fire) form when hot,
molten rock crystallizes
and solidifies. The melt
originates deep within
the Earth near active
plate boundaries or hot
spots, then rises toward
the surface.
Examples of Igneous Rocks

Granite Deorite Gabbro

Rhyolite Andesite Basalt

2. Sedimentary Rock
Sedimentary rocks are formed from
pre-existing rocks or pieces of once-living
organisms. They form from deposits that
accumulate on the Earth's surface.
Examples of Sedimentary Rocks

Chert Conglomerate Limestone

Rock Salt Shale Sandstone

3. Metamorphic Rock
Metamorphic rocks form
from heat and pressure
changing the original or
parent rock into a
completely new rock. The
parent rock can be either
sedimentary, igneous, or
even another metamorphic
rock.
The
word"metamorphic" comes from
Greek and means "To Change
Form".
