What causes these changes?
Hormones are secretions of the endocrine glands
(body’s chemical messengers), which include pituitary, adrenal,
thyroid and primary sex glands and the pancreas

The Sex Hormones
• stimulate development of primary sex characteristics, so
that individuals become capable of reproduction
• testosterone - the male sex hormone that is responsible for the
development of male sex characteristics. It regulates fertility,
muscle mass, fat distribution and red blood cell production. Women
produce testosterone usually in smaller amounts
• estrogen - the female sex hormone that is responsible for female
physical features and reproduction. Fertility and menstruation are
also controlled by another hormone - progesterone.
The Sex Hormones

• all human beings produce both male and female hormones,


including steroid hormone - Androgen (primarily influence the
growth and development of the male reproductive system; and for
female, they are converted into estrogens
• from puberty through sexual maturity, females produce more female
hormones, males produce more male hormones. However, the
actual quantity varies from one individual to another
