SAJOJO DANCE

The Origin of the Sajojo Dance


• Sajojo dance is a traditional dance whose lyrics are
in Moi language originating from the Sorong area,
Southwest Papua. This dance is often used as a
performance at various events, whether traditional,
cultural or just entertainment. This dance is very
famous in Papua. This dance can be danced by
various groups, both men and women, young and
old, because this dance is a social dance.

Sajojo dance is a simple and typical regional dance
from Papua which is known throughout the
archipelago. Sajojo dance is also known as a social
dance such as the Cokek dance or an entertainment
dance that can be performed by anyone, whether
male, female, old dancers or young dancers.
• The uniqueness of the Sajojo dance is the clothing
worn by the dancers, namely light brown tassel
skirts with necklaces, spears, tifas plus various kinds
of equipment typical of local customs. Sajojo Dance
has energetic, distinctive movements, full of joy
and a spirit of togetherness. With dance
movements that are quite easy to follow and
remember, this dance is easy for anyone to learn.
The meaning and function of the
Sajojo dance
• The Sajojo dance means the spirit of togetherness and
depicts the joy among indigenous people in Papua. This can
be seen from the expressions of the Sajojo dancers and
their movements which contain a lot of unity and rhythm.
Apart from togetherness and solidarity, the meaning of the
Sajojo dance can also be seen from the meaning of the
Sajojo lyrics as the accompaniment to this dance, namely a
village flower who has a beautiful face and is coveted by
many men in his village. The Sajojo dance also depicts
mutual cooperation in community life in Papua.
• There is also the initial function of the Sajojo dance, which
was to be performed as part of traditional ceremonies in
Papua. However, as time goes by, the Sajojo dance is now
also performed to welcome distinguished guests who come
to visit Papua. Currently, Sajojo and the Sajojo dance have
become a characteristic of local Papuan tribal customs to
attract tourists and serve as entertainment for visitors who
come to Papua. The Sajojo dance is quite well known in
Indonesia and internationally as a representation of
Indonesia's customs and culture.
