INTRODUCTION

Polymers have been essential components of commodities since the early days of humankind. The use of wool
(keratin), cotton and linen fibres (cellulose) for garments, paper reed (cellulose) for paper are just a few examples
of how ancient societies exploited polymer-containing raw materials to obtain artefacts and it play a crucial role in
our daily lives, becoming ubiquitous in various aspects of modern life.
Understanding the nature and applications of polymers is essential to appreciate their impact on our society

3
DEFINITION OF POLYMER

A polymer is a substance or material consisting of very large molecules called macromolecules, composed of many repeating
subunits called monomers.
This chain-like structure gives rise to a variety of materials with unique properties, ranging from plastics to synthetic fibers.

4
CLASSIFICATION OF POLYMERS

Polymers can be broadly classified into two categories:

thermoplastics, which can be melted and remolded, and thermosetting polymers, which harden irreversibly when heated.
Another classification is based on their source, distinguishing synthetic polymers from natural polymers such as cellulose
and proteins.

5
APPLICATION OF POLYMERS IN LIFE:

The applications of polymers are vast, touching various sectors. In industry, plastics play a central role in
manufacturing lightweight and durable products. Synthetic fibers like nylon and polyester are widely used in the
textile industry. Polymers are also present in medical devices, food packaging, and electronic components

6
CONCLUSION

In conclusion, polymers are versatile materials that shape our modern way of life.
Their structural diversity and unique properties pave the way for continuous innovations while raising
questions about their environmental impact.
Understanding and mastering polymers are essential to balance the benefits of their use with the need to
preserve our environment.
