CEN 307-BEAM DESIGN

• Beam Design:
• Beam Design –entails the selection of beam cross section that will have enough
strength and that will meet serviceability requirements.
• Flexure is almost always critical than shear. Usual practice is design for flexure
and then check for shear
• Design Procedure:
• 1. Compute required moment strength
• 1.1 LRFD- Mu from factored loads
• 1.2 ASD – Ma from service load( un-factored)
• 1.3 Dead load of beam is usually ignored but checked later, after section for
flexure is determined
CEN 307-BEAM DESIGN
• Beam Design:
• 2. If beam is laterally supported throughout its length: NO LTB,

• 2.1 Compute required Zx,
• LRFD: from ,

• ASD: from

• 2.2. Select a shape that satisfies Zx,
• 2.2.1 Compute available strength of selected shape and
compare with required strength , revise if necessary.
• 2.2.2 Use of beam design charts AISC Manual ( Part 3)
• 2.3. Check shear strength
• 2.4. Check deflection
• 3. If beam is not laterally supported throughout its length:
• 3.1 Compute required Zx, from , ASSUME 2/3 Fy
• LRFD: ASD:
• 3.2. Select a shape that satisfies Zx,
• 3.2.1 Determine if shape is compact or non-compact and investigate
• 2.2.2 Use of beam design charts AISC Manual ( Part 3)
• 2.3. Check shear strength
• 2.4. Check deflection
