Listening for
Appreciation
• The appreciation of music
may be defined as the
acquired ability to listen to
music intelligently.
• People have different
aptitudes in their musical
perceptiveness, intelligent
listening is necessary.
The Four Types
of Listening
• Passive Listening
• Sensuous Listening
• Emotional Listening
• Perceptive Listening
Passive
Listening
• In some situations, this
music is not intended to
claim the full attention of the
listener.
• A good example is a type of
“background music”.
• The listener hears the music
but does not really listen to
it.
Sensuous
Listening
• The listener obtains pleasure from
an awareness of the sheer beauty of
the sound.
• It can either be a calmness and
clear tones of a flute, a choir, or a
rondalla.
• The pleasurable sensations of
musical tone have some value to
the listener, regardless if they don’t
have any clear understanding of the
music.
Emotional
Listening
• The listener is concerned mainly
with his own reaction to the
music, with the emotions and
moods.
• We tend to have emotional
responses to the music we hear,
and this type of music can
produce an experience to the
listener.
Perceptive
Listening
• This type of listening requires
concentration on the music itself
and what is going on musically.
• The listener knows what to listen
for, understands what is heard
and has good basis for
experiencing the art of music.
