GRAVITY
LESSON 3
Earth and Life Science
GRAVITY

Gravity is a force of
attraction that exists between
any two masses, any two
bodies, and any two particles.
GRAVITY
Gravity is not just the
attraction between objects and
the Earth. It is an attraction
that exists between all objects,
everywhere in the universe.
ISAAC NEWTON

Sir Isaac Newton (1642 -- 1727)

discovered that a force is
required to change the speed or
direction of movement of an
object.
ISAAC NEWTON
He also realized that the force called
"gravity" must make an apple fall from
a tree, or humans and animals live on the
surface of our spinning planet without
being flung off. Furthermore, he deduced
that gravity forces exist between all
objects
NEWTON’S LAW
OF MOTION
1. LAW OF INERTIA
Newton's first law states that every object
will remain at rest or in uniform motion in
a straight line unless compelled to change
its state by the action of an external force.

No net force Constant velocity

2. LAW OF
ACCELERATION
The second law explains how the velocity of an
object changes when it is subjected to an external
force. The law defines a force to be equal to change
in momentum (mass times velocity) per change in
time.
"changes"
2. LAW OF
ACCELERATION
For an object with a constant
mass m, the second law states
that the force F is the product
of an object's mass and its
acceleration a.
2. LAW OF
ACCELERATION
2. LAW OF
ACCELERATION
EXAMPLE
1. A tennis racket hit a sand-
filled tennis ball with a force
of 4N. While the 275g ball is
in contact with the racket, what
is it acceleration?
2. LAW OF
ACCELERATION
EXAMPLE
1. A tennis racket hit a sand-
filled tennis ball with a force
of 4N. While the 275g ball is
in contact with the racket, what
is it acceleration?
2. LAW OF
ACCELERATION
EXAMPLE
2. What force must act on a
50.0 – kg mass to give it an
acceleration of 0.30 m/s^2?
3. LAW OF INTERACTION
The third law states that for every action (force) in
nature there is an equal and opposite reaction. In other
words, if object A exerts a force on object B, then object B
also exerts an equal force on object A. Notice that the
forces are exerted on different objects.
