Introduction
• SAARC is the eco-political organization of 8 South Asian Nations,
which was established on 8th December, 1985 for friendship and
cooperation among themselves and with the other developing countries.

• Covering a population of more than 2 billion, SAARC is the largest


regional organization in the world.

India and SAARC
• India, as a founding member of the South Asian Association for Regional
Cooperation (SAARC), has played a significant role in the organization
since its establishment in 1985. India's relationship with SAARC can be
summarized as follows:
 Leadership Role: India, being one of the largest and most influential
countries in the South Asian region, has often assumed a leadership role
within SAARC. It has hosted several SAARC summits and played a key
role in the organization's decision-making processes.
 Bilateral Relationships: India's participation in SAARC has allowed it
to strengthen bilateral relationships with its neighboring countries in the
region. Through SAARC, India has engaged in various regional
initiatives and collaborative efforts, including economic cooperation and
development projects.
 Trade and Economic Cooperation: India has been active in promoting
economic cooperation within SAARC. It has taken steps to reduce trade
barriers and enhance economic integration among member countries,
with the aim of boosting regional trade and economic growth.
 Regional Stability: India recognizes the importance of a stable and
prosperous South Asian region. It has been actively involved in
initiatives to address common challenges such as poverty, terrorism, and
climate change to enhance regional stability.
