FREQUENCY REUSE
 What is Frequency Reuse?

 As the spectrum is limited,

frequencies have to be re-used
to provide enough capacity.

 The more often a frequency is

reused within a certain amount
of group of cells, the smaller
the frequency re-use.

 REUSE CLUSTER:
Area including cells which do
not reuse the same frequency
(or frequency group)

Page 3 Company Confidential

RCS (1)

 RCS (Reuse Cluster Size)

 If all cells within the reuse cluster, have the same

amount of TRX. RCS is defined by the formula

RCS = Total Available Freq

No. of TRX per cell

Page 4 Company Confidential

RCS (2)

 Using DIGITEL Spectrum

RCS = 50 channels / 4 TRX

RCS = 12 reuse pattern

Page 5 Company Confidential

 Interferer Probability, Pint
 In general, there is a functional dependence between the
Interferer Probability and Cluster Size Pint=f(RCS).
 Table below shows some simulated values of existing radio
networks.

 The higher the REUSE CLUSTER SIZE, the lesser the

Interferer Probability in a network.

Page 6 Company Confidential

Multiple Reuse Pattern (MRP)

 Different types of carriers, different interference

potential is expected.

 As the BCCH carrier has the highest interferer potential

because of being on air all the time, the REUSE on the
BCCH layer is higher than the other layers.

 TCH layer can be planned with smaller REUSE.

Page 7 Company Confidential

GSM Restriction

 Intra site minimum channel spacing - 2

 Intra cell minimum channel spacing - 3

Neighbour Cells

 Cells not declared as adjacency but are in the

neighbourhood may use ADJACENT FREQUENCIES if it
is not avoidable, but not co-channel frequencies.
 Cells that are neighbours, thus have HO relationship, must
not have CO or ADJACENT FREQUENCIES.
 If ADJACENT CHANNEL is used, HO will be risky and poor
quality perceived by user.

NCR Network Retune
25 January 2003

Page 23 Company Confidential

Reasons for Retune

 As more sites are added to a network, frequency

planning becomes a tedious task. For manual
planning, groupings will be tighter and tighter.
Interference will be increasing as channel collisions
are higher.

 There will always be a need to plan frequencies for all

sites at a time. This will result in an even distribution
of channel allocation and better frequency
management for the upcoming sites. Also, a good
plan directly relates to a good quality network.

Page 24 Company Confidential

Scope of Work (1)

 Schedule: January 25-26, 2003 (Saturday - Sunday).

 Affected sites: All on-air sites and forecasted sites
that will be up by scheduled date.
 Region: NCR network only and border sites.
 Number of sites: 170 including Temporary sites.

Page 25 Company Confidential

Scope of Work (2)

 Drivetest will follow directly after re-tune activities.

This verification procedure will give an actual feel of
the network and will determine if some minor retunes
are required, until the network stabilizes. Also
statistics both before and after retune will be gathered
for comparison purposes.
