What is Hazard?
“A hazard is any
source of potential
damage, harm or
adverse health
effects on something
or someone.”
Type is Hazard?
There are five primary workplace hazard categories identified by
OSHA:
• Safety—examples: frayed electrical wires, slippery surfaces,
obstructed walkways
• Chemical—examples: acids, flammable liquids, carbon
monoxide
• Biological—examples: blood, viruses, mold
• Physical—example: extreme temperatures, excessive noise
• Ergonomic—examples: repetitive awkward movements,
strained posture

Identification
Hazard identification is part
of the process used to
evaluate if any particular
situation, item, thing, etc.
may have the potential to
cause harm.
Hazard identification can be done:
• During design and implementation
⚬ Designing a new process or procedure
⚬ Purchasing and installing new machinery
• Before tasks are done
⚬ Checking equipment or following processes
⚬ Reviewing surroundings before each shift
• While tasks are being done
⚬ Be aware of changes, abnormal conditions, or sudden emissions
• During inspections
⚬ Formal, informal, supervisor, health and safety committee
• After incidents
⚬ Near misses or minor events
⚬ Injuries
Asking yourself these seven
simple questions
Being aware of on-site risks is vital. Before
doing any work, take a few minutes to check
your surroundings. Think about what you
will be doing, what equipment and plant you
will need, how you could get hurt, and what
you’ll do if something unexpected happens.
Information About Hazard

• Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).

• Manufacturer’s operating instructions, manuals, etc.
• Test or monitor for exposure (occupational hygiene testing such as chemical or
noise exposure).
• Results of any job safety analysis.
• Experiences of other organizations similar to yours.
• Trade or safety associations.
• Information, publications, alerts, etc. as published by reputable organizations, labor
unions, or government agencies.
Risk Assessment
Once a hazard has been identified,
the likelihood and possible severity
of injury or harm will need to be
assessed before determining how
best to minimize the risk. High-risk
hazards will need to be addressed
more urgently than low-risk
situations.
Determining Control

A control, in terms of occupational

health and safety, is a type of
intervention used to manage, direct,
or mitigate a workplace hazard.
