Anglo-Muhammadan Oriental
College (now Aligarh Muslim
University) in 1875 in Aligarh,
Uttar P r a d e s h (now), I n d i a (British
India then). It was India's first
centre of Islamic and Western
higher education, with instruction
given in English and modeled on
Oxford. It s t a n d s a s a t e s t a m e n t to

Early Life

B o r n in 1817, Sir Syed


faced n u m e r o u s c h a l l e n g e s b u t r e m a i n e d
c o m m i t t e d to education. H is experiences
s h a p e d his vision for a m o d e r n
e d u c a tio n a l institution.
Educational Reforms

A d v o c a te d for m o d e r n
education, e m p h a s i z i n g t h e i m p o r t a n c e of
science, literature, a n d critical thinking. His
efforts laid t h e fo u n d a tio n for Aligarh
Mu s l im University.
R e c o g n i z e d t h e n e e d for a center of l earni ng that w o u l d
e m p o w e r t h e M u s l i m c o m m u n i t y. Ali garh M u s l i m University w a s established to
address this need.
Foundation Stone Laying

University w a s laid by
o n 24th May 1875. This event m a r k e d
t h e b e g i n n i n g of a n e w era in education.
First graduate
The first graduate of Aligarh
Muslim University (AMU) was
Ishwari Prasad Upadhyaya, a
Hindu historian. He was born
i n 1 8 8 8 i n K u r r a C h i t t a r p u r,
Agra, Uttar Pradesh. His father
passed away when he was in
class 12th, and he had to take
care of his younger siblings.
Despite the challenges, he
continued his studies and Dr. Iswari Prasad
g r a d u a t e d f r o m A M U i n 1 9 11 .

Early Challenges

Here are some specific examples of when, where, and how Sir Syed
Ahmad Khan was insulted, defamed, and tortured:
 1857: Sir Syed was captured by the British
and imprisoned in Fort William in Calcutta.
He was subjected to harsh interrogation and
physical torture.
 1870: Sir Syed was delivering a speech at a
public meeting in Aligarh when a group of
Muslim protesters interrupted his speech
and began throwing stones and shoes at him.
Khan was forced to flee the meeting.
 1881: Sir Syed was traveling to England by
ship when a group of Muslim passengers
began to harass and abuse him. They called
him a traitor and a sellout.
Syed Ahmad Khan was knighted by the British government on January 1,
1888, and became known as Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. He was awarded the
Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India (KCSI) for his
services to education and social reform.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan died on March 27, 1898, in Aligarh, India. He was
73 years old at the time of his death. His death was a major loss to the
Muslim community in India. He was a visionary leader who had a
profound impact on the development of Muslim education and society.
