ROBERT OPPENHEIMER
"the father of the atomic bomb"
J. ROBERT
OPPENHEIMER
Julius Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist and
director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II. He is often
credited as the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role in organizing
the Manhattan Project, the research and development undertaking
that created the first nuclear weapons.

Apr 22, 1904 Feb 18, 1967

EARLY LIFE AND
EDUCATION
Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer was born in New York City
on April 22, 1904. The Oppenheimer family lived at
155 Riverside Dr. , Manhattan, in an apartment with
fine European furniture, servants, and original
paintings by Picasso, Rembrandt, and van Gogh. Young
Oppenheimer was sent to Ethical Culture School. He
graduated the Ethical Culture School in 1921 then
travelled to Germany where he contracted dysentery
and became too ill to enter college. He entered Harvard
University in the fall of 1922 studying chemistry then
switched to physics.
THE MANHATTAN
PROJECT
In 1939, in Germany the atomic nucleus
were splitted. Oppenheimer and other
scientists have guessed that they could to
get a controlled chain reaction, which is the
key of creating a new very destructive
weapon.

On October 9, 1941, shortly before

the United States entered World War II,
President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved a
crash program to develop an atomic bomb.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND
DISCOVERIES
• He made significant contributions to
theoretical physics, including achievements
in quantum mechanics and nuclear
physics such as the Born–Oppenheimer
approximation for molecular wave
functions, work on the theory
of electrons and positrons,
the Oppenheimer–Phillips
process in nuclear fusion, and early work
on quantum tunneling.
ATOM BOMB
is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions,
either fission (fission bomb) or a combination of fission and fusion reactions
(thermonuclear bomb), producing a nuclear explosion. To develop the atomic
bomb, Oppenheimer and his team found a way to bombard neutrons with
plutonium and uranium that caused a nuclear fission reaction. During a nuclear
fission reaction, the heavy plutonium or uranium nucleus splits into smaller
nuclei while releasing energy and other neutrons.
HOW DID THE ATOMIC BOMB CHANGE THE WOLRD?
The bomb was a major turning point as it brought the World War II to an end and changed the world in endless ways. The
atomic bomb changed the global power equation significantly. US became a military superpower along with the USSR.
“Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”
J. Robert Oppenheimer.
