Thermodynamics 3

TWO-PHASE SYSTEM
• Working Substance
• Substance which energy can be stored or from which energy can be
removed
• Pure Substance
• Working substance that has a homogenous and invariable chemical
composition even though there is a change of phase.
PROPERTIES
• Saturated Temperature – temp at which liquid start to boil and vapor
start to condense at a given pressure.
• Saturated Pressure – pressure at which phase change takes place at a
given temperature.
• Saturated Liquid – liquid at saturation temperature and pressure. It
has no vapor content.
• Compressed Liquid – liquid whose pressure is higher than saturation
pressure corresponding to given temperature.
• Subcooled liquid – liquid whose temperature is lower than saturation
temperature corresponding to given pressure.
PROPERTIES
• Degrees Subcooled – difference between the saturation temperature
and the actual subcooled temperature.

• Vapor/Steam – term given to gaseous phase that is in contact with

liquid phase.
• Saturated Vapor – vapor at saturation temperature and pressure. It
has no liquid or moisture content.
• Superheated Vapor – vapor whose temperature is higher than the
saturation temperature corresponding to the given pressure.
• Degrees Superheat – difference between actual temperature
(superheated) and the saturation temperature.
PROPERTIES
• Wet Vapor – mixture of saturated vapor and saturated liquid.
• Quality of Wet Vapor – fraction or percentage by weight that is
saturated vapor.
• ; x=quality, mg=mass of vapor, mt=total mass
• Moisture Percentage – fraction or percentage by weight that is
saturated liquid.
• ; y=moisture, mf=mass of liquid, mt=total mass
• Critical Point – point that represents the pressure and temperature at
which liquid and vapor can coexist in equilibrium.
