ENERGY FROM

VOLCANOES
WHAT IS
GEOTHERMAL
ENERGY
Geothermal energy is thermal
energy in the Earth's crust. It
combines energy from the
formation of the planet and from
radioactive decay. Geothermal
energy has been exploited as a
source of heat and/or electric
power for millennia.
DEFINITION OF
TERMS
• Geothermal energy is heat within the earth. The
word geothermal comes from the Greek words
geo (earth) and therme (heat). Geothermal
energy is a renewable energy source because
heat is continuously produced inside the earth.
WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY?
The heat of the Earth used to produce
geothermal energy stems from impressive
and spectacular natural phenomena that are
intrinsic to our planet. The best-known
natural displays of geothermal energy are
volcanoes, fumaroles, boric-acid fumaroles
and geysers

FROM
VOLCANOES
What is the energy
from the volcano?
The energy from the volcano is the the molten rock (magma)
in the Earth's crust that drives volcanic eruptions can also
provide heat for electricity generation. Geothermal energy is
derived from heat within the Earth's crust.
What is the energy
release by a
volcano?
A small volcanic eruption, such as a VEI 1, releases about
10^9 joules of energy, which is roughly equivalent to the
energy released by a small atomic bomb. On the other hand,
a large volcanic eruption, such as a VEI 8, can release up to
10^17 joules of energy, which is equivalent to thousands of
atomic bombs.
