ELECTRICAL

SYMBOLS
By: Rajhiana Bawa & Nadiya Hussin
LESSON
• The best way to show an electrical circuit is by illustrating it using basic electrical
symbols. You can sketch a complex electrical circuit utilizing the standard and
simplified electrical symbols. Hence, anyone who knows the components of
electrical and electronic circuits can read, understand, and build quickly.
ELECTRICAL SYMBOLS
• Electrical Symbols are small drawings or pictograms used to represent. different
electrical devices ices in a diagram or plan of an electrical electrical circuit. cire
These symbols are utilized in drawing schematic diagrams and electrical plans
for various sorts of electrical works. Essentially, any electrical fixture found in a
house incorporates a symbol that coincides to said fixture on an electrical wiring
diagram. These are exceptionally useful guide for an electrician and doing the
wiring easier to install as well.
Here is the list of common Electrical
Symbols

.
SAFETY and HAZARD SYMBOLS
• Safety and Hazard Symbols are an instant way of warning and
identifying threats to avoid a possibly hazardous conditions and
electrical hazards in the area. These colored or illuminated signboards
are universally recognized and have clear written or picture messages.
Alerting workers to high voltage areas, electrical hazards, power lines
and other electrical equipment within the area, can help prevent fires
and injuries. Proper electrical signs can inform workers of the
dangers in the area.

ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM
• Electrical Wiring is a process of connecting cables and wires to the
related devices such as fuse, switches, sockets, lights, fans etc. to the
most distribution. board of a particular structure to the utility pole for
continues power supply.
• A circuit diagram is a graphical representation of an electrical circuit
that are widely used for circuit design, development, and
maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment. Unlike a block
diagram or layout diagram, a circuit diagram shows the actual
electrical connections.
ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM
• Electric circuits, whether simple or complex, can be presented in a
variety of ways such as describing it with words or drawings. Simple
saying like "A light bulb is connected to a D-cell" is sufficient enough
to describe a simple circuit. Upon hearing the words, an individual
accustomed to it will quickly imagine the circuit in their mind but
another means of describing a circuit is to basically draw it. Such
drawings give a quicker mental picture of the actual circuit.

• A final means of describing an electric circuit is by using conventional

circuit symbols to provide a schematic diagram of the circuit and its
components. Some circuit symbols utilized in schematic diagrams are
shown below
ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM
• A single cell or other power source is represented by a long and a short
parallel line. A collection of cells or battery is represented by a collection of
long and short parallel lines. In both cases, the long line is represented by
the positive terminal of the energy source and the short line represents the
negative terminal. A straight line is utilized to represent a connecting wire
between any two components of the circuit. An electrical device that gives
resistance to the flow of charge is generically referred to as a resistor and is
represented by a zigzag line. An open switch is generally represented by
providing a break in a straight line by lifting a portion of the line upward at
a diagonal. It will be imperative to either memorize these symbols or to
refer to the table of common electrical symbols as often as possible until
you become accustomed to their use.
• The diagram below is the illustration of the pictorial circuit diagram and
schematic circuit diagram where the Three D-cells are placed in a battery pack to
power a circuit containing three light bulbs. This means that pictorial circuit
diagram uses simple images of components, while a schematic diagram shows
the components and interconnections of the circuit using standardized symbolic
representations.
ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM
• Using verbal description, one can acquire a mental picture of the
circuit being described. This verbal description can then be
represented by a drawing of three cells and three light bulbs
associated by wires. Finally, the circuit symbols displayed above can
be used to represent the same circuit. Note that three sets of long
and short parallel lines have been utilized to represent the battery
pack with its three D- cells. And note that each light bulb is
represented by its own individual resistor symbol. Straight lines have
been utilized to associate the two terminals of the battery to the
resistors and the resistors to each other.
ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM
• Pictorial circuit diagrams are much easier to understand than schematic
circuit diagrams. By connecting realistic electrical components with the
wiring, this makes it simple and quick for viewers to identify the electrical
components of a system quickly without professional knowledge required.
• A schematic circuit diagram represents the electrical system in the form of
picture that shows the most features or relationships but not the details.
The presentation of electrical components and wiring does not completely
correspond to the physical arrangements within the real device. If you want
to understand a schematic diagram, you're required to master the essential
knowledge of electricity and physics as well as universally standardized
symbols.
