    Bacteria are divided into two main categories: aerobes and anaerobes. Anaerobes are further divided into clostridia, spirochetes, and bacteroides. Gram staining is used to classify bacteria and divide them into subgroups such as gram positive cocci like staphylococci and streptococci or gram negative bacilli like E. coli, klebsiella, and pseudomonas. Certain bacteria are also classified by whether they are acid fast or form part of pathogenic genera such as mycobacterium and clostridium.
