PEOPLE BEHIND

ASTRONOMY

Prepared by: Hafsah M. Macakiling

Ancient Astronomy
The great philosophers of ancient Greece
wrote about many different subjects,
including what they saw in the sky.

Those writings became the foundation on

which later astronomers built modern
astronomy.
GEOCENTRIC MODEL
EQUANT
Claudius Ptolemy (AD c100-170)

Ptolemy was an astronomer and

mathematician.
He believed that the Earth was the center of
the Universe.
His famous work was called the Almagesti.

He worked out that the planets must move in

epicycles, smaller circles, and the Earth
itself moved along an equant.

ARISTOTLE (384-322 BCE)

The grandfather of science

He discovered that the planets and

stars must be circular since they were
perfect and if the motions were
circular.
Astronomy of the Renaissance
Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543)

He pursued a lifetime career in the church

He is a mathematician and astronomer
His work triggered a revolution in human
thought
He discovered the Heliocentric Universe
Those who did study his work intact often
did so in secret. They were called
Copernicans.

TychoTycho
Brahe (1546-1601)
Brahe’s Model

New star (now called Tycho’s supernova)

He announces his discovery in a small
book, De Stella Nova (The New Star),
published in 1573.
Tycho Brahe’s model of the universe
retained the first principle of classical
astronomy.

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)- An
astronomer of Humble Origins
He was a successor of Tycho Brahe.

1. Law of Ellipses
2. Law of Equal Area
3. Law of Harmony
MODERN ASTRONOMY
Galilean’s Moon
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

Galileo invented an improvised telescope

that let him observe and describe the
moons of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, the
phases of Venus, sunspots and the rugged
lunar surface.
He rushed a small book into print.

Sir Isaac Newton and Orbital Motion

The birth of modern astronomy

Newton extracted three laws that
relate the motion of a body.

Albert Einstein (1879–1955)
He became one of the most famous
scientists ever after proposing a new way of
looking at the universe that went beyond
current understanding.
Einstein suggested that:
The laws of physics are the same
throughout the universe,
 That the speed of light in a vacuum is
constant, and;
That space and time are linked in an entity
known as space-time.
"Einstein was a physicist, a natural

philosopher, the greatest of our time."
Edwin Hubble(1899–1953)

He calculated that a small blob in

the sky existed outside of the Milky
Way.
Hubble Space Telescope
Hubble went on to determine that
the universe itself was expanding, a
calculation which later came to be
known as Hubble's law.
Harlow Shapley (1885–1972)

He calculated the size of the

Milky Way galaxy and general
location of its center.

Frank Drake (1930)

He is one of the pioneers in the

search for extraterrestrial
intelligence.
Carl Sagan (1934–1996)
Found evidence that Saturn's moon
Titan contains oceans stocked with
the building blocks of life.
Atmosphere of Venus is prohibitively
hot and dense

Stephen Hawking-(1942-2018)

He has made many significant

insights into the field of
cosmology.

Agencies Monitoring Astronomy
NASA- National Aeronautics and Space
Administration
Is the U.S. government agency responsible
for leading the nation's explorations of
space.
NASA has since sponsored space
expeditions, both human and mechanical,
that have yielded vital information about
the solar system and universe.
It has also launched numerous earth-
orbiting satellites that have been
instrumental in everything from weather
forecasting to navigation to global
communications.
European Space Agency
(Agence Spatiale Européenne)
An intergovernmental
organization of 22 member
state dedicated to the
exploration of space.
Established in 1975 and
located in Paris, France.

(JAXA) -Japan Aerospace Exploration
Agency
(JAXA) was formed in 2003
after the merger of three
government space
organizations into one.
Japan's human exploration
program long predates the
beginning of JAXA, including
numerous contributions to
the International Space
Station.
