Sampling Methodology

Systematic Sampling – Practice class

Lecture 5:
Date: 09 June 2023

Course Teacher:
Mohammed Nazmul Huq
Problem 1
A class teacher wants to evaluate the students in terms of amount of
time students spent on preparing ‘Sampling Methodology’ last week,
time spent on Facebook and whether watched TV. He has a list of all
the students with the required information as follows:
Time spent Time spent on Watch TV? Time spent Time spent on Watch TV?
on study (in Facebook (in 1=yes; on study (in Facebook (in 1=yes;
Id no. minutes) hrs) 2=No Id no. minutes) hrs) 2=No
2 30 10 1 35 35 10 2
4 35 15 2 36 45 12 2
6 45 8 1 37 50 15 1
8 60 9 1 38 60 9 1
10 25 10 2 39 65 10 2
13 20 4 1 40 70 12 1
14 90 15 1 41 50 8 1
18 10 6 1 42 45 7 2
20 25 7 2 43 45 15 1
24 45 14 1 44 50 12 2
28 50 8 1 36 60 10 1
30 45 9 2 48 60 9 2
31 60 10 1 50 65 14 2
32 75 12 1 52 45 14 1
34 60 15 2 53 35 15 1
Problem 1…

Draw a Systematic Sample of size 9 from the list.

Also find:
i. Average amount of time the students spent on preparing the course
last week. Also find the standard error of the mean.
ii. Average amount of time the students spent on Facebook last week.
iii. Proportion of students watch TV. Also find the standard error of
the proportion.
Hints
Drawing Systematic Sample:

The first element (i) is selected randomly within the 1st to the kth
element in the list
k is an integer, known as sampling interval:
here,
N
k N = population size
n n = sample size

Systematic sampling selects every kth element from then onwards.

Thus the sample elements comprise:
i, i+k, i+2k, …………, i+(n-1)k, …………., nk
Hints…

Estimation of population mean:

n

x i i = 1, 2, 3, …………, n
xsy  i 1
n
here,
xi is the ith unit in the sample

Estimation of variance of sample mean (if population units are

randomly ordered):

N  n s2
v  xsy  
1 n
 where, s 
2

n  1 i 1
 xi  xsy 
2

N n
Hints…
Estimating population proportion (for population in random order):

^ 𝑟
Estimation of population proportion: 𝑃=𝑝 𝑠𝑦 =
𝑛

Sample variance of P: 𝑣 ( 𝑝 𝑠𝑦 ) =
𝑛− 1 (
𝑝 𝑠𝑦 (1 − 𝑝 𝑠𝑦 )
× 1−
𝑛
𝑁 )
𝑆𝐸 ( 𝑝 𝑠𝑦 ) =√ 𝑣 ( 𝑝 𝑠𝑦 )
Standard error:

here,
psy = sample proportion

r = number of cases posses the attribute of interest
