In this presentation, we will discuss best
practices and protocols for ensuring
safety in the chemistry laboratory. It is
crucial to prioritize safety to prevent
accidents and ensure a productive work
environment. We will cover various
aspects of laboratory safety to promote
a culture of responsibility and caution.

Follow the
instructions
Follow the
instructions

• Following instructions is important because

it keeps you and others safe, ensures your
experiment's success, prevents accidents,
and avoids disciplinary consequences.
Know the Location of Safety
Equipment
Know the Location of
Safety Equipment
Knowing the location of safety equipment and how to
use it is crucial in case of emergencies. Make sure to
periodically check equipment for functionality, such as
the safety shower and eye wash station, to ensure they
are in working order.
Dress for the Lab
Dress for the Lab

• Wear protective gear in the lab

for safety.
Don't Eat or Drink in the
Laboratory
Don't Eat or Drink in
the Laboratory
• Eating or drinking in the lab poses
risks because chemicals or germs
could contaminate your food, and
spills might disrupt experiments.
Also, snacking can distract you
from your work. It's best to avoid
food and drinks in the lab and
concentrate on experiments
without munching or sipping.
Don't Taste Chemicals
Don't Taste or Sniff
Chemicals

• Avoid tasting or smelling

chemicals or biological cultures in
the lab, as it can be dangerous or
deadly. Always label containers to
know their contents accurately
before use.
Don't Play Mad Scientist in
the Laboratory

Scientist in the
Laboratory
• In the lab, avoid reckless
experimentation or horseplay to
prevent accidents like
explosions, fires, or toxic gas
releases, and to maintain a safe
environment for everyone.
Dispose of Lab
Waste Properly
Dispose of Lab Waste
Properly

• Before ending an experiment, ensure you know how to properly clean up

and dispose of materials, including whether chemicals can be poured
down the drain, if biological cultures require specific disposal methods like
autoclaving, and the protocol for disposing of sharps such as broken glass
or needles.

Know What to Do
With Lab Accidents
• It's crucial to report accidents
promptly to a supervisor in the
lab, as hiding them could lead
to potential harm to yourself or
others, and cause trouble for

Don't Experiment on Yourself
Don't Experiment on
Yourself

• Experimenting on yourself is risky and

unreliable, as it defies the scientific method
which requires data from multiple subjects.
Contrary to science fiction, self-
experimentation doesn't lead to superpowers
or groundbreaking discoveries, but rather
poses great personal risk.
Conclusion
Ensuring safety in the chemistry laboratory requires a
comprehensive approach encompassing PPE usage, chemical
storage, emergency procedures, equipment maintenance, waste
disposal, training, and audits. By prioritizing safety, we can create a
culture of responsibility and minimize the risk of accidents and
injuries.
