HOW DOES EYE WORK?

PRIMARY REFRACTIVE ERRORS
Near-sightedness Far-sightedness

 Distant objects appear blurry.  Nearer objects appear blurry.

 Image forms in front of retina due to:  Image forms behind retina due to:
• Elongation of eye ball • Compression of eye ball
• Rigid eye lens (ciliary muscles) • Rigid eye lens (ciliary muscles)

HOW DO THESE LENSES WORK?

WHAT DOES CONTACT LENS NUMBER MEAN?
WHAT ARE THEY MADE OF?
Glasses materials for lenses come in four types of plastic:
polyethylene
Rivex
Polycarbonate
high-index polymers
glass.
PLASTIC EYEGLASSES!

 A fantastic material for optical (glasses) lenses is polycarbonate, a form of

plastic that can be made transparent and easily molded. They are also
impact-resistant, making them a fantastic option for children (or adults!) prone
to accidents.
 Trivex glasses lenses are impact-resistant urethane-based pre-polymer plastic,
much like polycarbonate.
 Trivex and polycarbonate lenses are equally impact-resistant and
completely UV-protective.
THICKNESS MANAGEMENT!
 High-index polymers!
This kind of lens polymer frequently contains sulfur. These lenses have
a greater refractive index thanks to the atoms of this strong element, which
results in a narrower lens.
Despite their smaller size, high-index lenses are heavier due to the higher
density of the plastics used to manufacture them.
SPHERE, CYLINDER AND AXIS
Sphere (SPH) Cylinder (CYL)

 Indicates lens power to correct  Denotes lens power to correct

nearsightedness/farsightedness Astigmatism
 Measured in diopters (D)  Cornea is irregularly shaped causing
blurred/distorted vision.
 If (–) sign, nearsighted
 CYL combines multiple focal points into
 If (+) sign, farsighted
one focal point on a certain axis.
 AXIS indicates degree and direction of
astigmatism.
