OBJECTIVES:
In this lesson, you are expected to:
1. represent integers on the number line
2. compare and order integer
3. represents the absolute value of a
number on a number line as the
distance of a number from 0.
In Mathematics, every POSITIVE NUMBER has
an opposite NEGATIVE NUMBER and vice
versa. The set of POSITIVE integers,
NEGATIVE integers, and ZERO comprise the
set of INTEGERS, which is also known as
SIGNED NUMBERS.
We can use the number line to show the set of integers.

Negative Integers Zero Positive Integers

The arrowheads indicate that line and the set of numbers

continue indefinitely. A nonzero number written without a
sign is understood to be positive. Zero is neither positive
nor negative.

Opposite quantities abound in real life.

ONE KILOMETER NORTH is the opposite of
ONE KILOMETER SOUTH.
Example Use a signed number to represent each
situation.

a. The price of each share of stock dropped by Php 4.

A DROP of Php 4 is - Php 4

b. A submarine is 26 meters below the sea level.

26 meters below the sea level is -26 meters

c. A savings account gained an interest of Php 120.

A gained of Php 120 is +Php 120
Example Use a signed number to represent each

situation.
d. An airplane flies at 27 000 feet above sea level.
27 000 feet above sea level is +27 000 feet

e. Antartica recorded a temperature of 540C below zero.

540C below zero is -540C

f. The peso has depreciated by Php 5 since the year 2000.

Depreciated by Php 5 is - Php 5
Example Use a signed number to represent each

situation.
g. The country's GNP grows by 5%.
The GNP grows by 5% is +5%

h. There is a budget deficit of Php 1.8 million.

The budget deficit of Php 1.8 million is - Php 1.8million
ACTIVITY #7 (1 WHOLE)
REPRESENTING OPPOSITES
Situation Representation of Opposite of the Representation of
the Situation Situation the opposite
1. walk 3km east +3 walking 3km west -3
2. gain of Php 1 000
3. withdrawal of Php 5 000
4. walk backwards 5steps
5. drive 40km south
6. 26 000ft above the sea level
7. interest of Php 22
8. 150 C below zero
9. rise by 8 points
10. demerit of 5 points
ORDERING INTEGERS
Consider the integers on the number line.
INCREASING

The order of the integers on he number line tells us which

number has a greater value. Observe that 3 is the right of
1, and 3 is greater than 1; 1 is to the right of 0, and 1 is
greater than zero. Since 0 is to the right of -1, we say that
0 is greater than -1. Similarly, -1 is to the right of -5,
hence -1 is greater than -5.
SPEAKING MATHEMATICALLY
The symbol > is used denote 'is greater than'.
The symbol < is used denote 'is less than'.
The symbol = is used denote 'is equal to'.
The symbol ≠ is used denote 'is not equal to'.
The symbol ≥ is used denote 'is greater than or equal to'.
The symbol ≤ is used denote 'is less than or equal to'.
Try This!!!
Determine whether >, < , or = in the following inetegers.
> 4
1. 10 ___ = 14
6. 14 ___
< 1
2. -1 ___ > -10
7. 5 ___
> -7
3. 7 ___ > -3
8. 3 ___

< -1
4. -2 ___ < 6
9. 4 ___
> -4
5. 9 ___ > -5
10. 5 ___
1. Arrange the integers 6, -2, -8, 0, 3
a. In ascending order b. In descending
order
a. Numbers arranged in ascending order begin with the
least in value and end with the greatest in values
-8, -2, 0, 3, 6

b. Numbers arranged in descending order start with the

greatest in value and end with the least in values
6, 3, 0, -2, -8,
2. Arrange the integers 7, -6, 4, -5, -13
a. In ascending order b. In descending
order
a. Numbers arranged in ascending order begin with the
least in value and end with the greatest in values
-13, -6, -5, 4, 7

b. Numbers arranged in descending order start with the

greatest in value and end with the least in values
7, 4, -5, -6, 13
ABSOLUTE VALUES OF A NUMBER

5 units away 5 units away

from 0 from 0

Both 5 and -5 are 5 units away from 0. Hence, we

say that the absolute value of both 5 and -5 is 5.

The ABSOLUTE VALUE of a number is the

distance between that the number and zero on the
number line. It is denoted by the two bars ( I I ).
5 units away 5 units away
from 0 from 0

Based on the figure above, we say that I 5 I = 5

and I -5 I = 5, since both 5 and -5 are 5 units
away from 0. In short, the absolute value of a
number is the magnitude of the number
without regard to a sign.
EXAMPLE
Find the absolute value of each number

1. I 10 I = 10 6. I 14 I = 14
2. I -1 I = 1 7. I 5 I = 5
3. I 7 I = 7 8. I 3 I = 3

4. I -2 I= 2 9. I 4 I = 4

5. I 9 I = 9 10. I 1 I = 1
REFLECTION!!!
“The opposite of GOOD is EVIL / BAD. Once
in our lives we are all evil infront of God because of
sin. We are all not worthy and we became his
enemy. But more than 2 000 yrs ago, there’s a
Savior came into the world to reconnect the lost
relationship with God – He’s Jesus Christ.
Imagined, we became an enemy of God but it will
turn into FRIENDS and that's because of Jesus
Christ. So, we now FRIENDS of God, if we accept
Jesus Christ in our lives.”
