CONSTRUCTING

GOOD
SENTENCES
What is a good sentence?

There are two requirements of a good

sentence
A good sentence must follow the rules
of grammar and state an idea clearly.
A good sentence has a distinct
function in the paragraph where it is
found.
1. day teacher experiment / asked class speech
taste biscuit samples unlabeled boxes / requested
students comments biscuits / majority tasty / day
brought kind class / students eating showed label
/ dog biscuits stopped eating commented
unpleasant / experiment important point /
people words.

2. One day, our teacher carried out an experiment.

He asked the class in speech to taste some biscuit
samples from unlabeled boxes. He requested his
students for comments on the biscuits. The
majority found the biscuits tasty.
The next day, the teacher brought
the same kind of biscuits to class.
While the students are eating, he
showed the label, Dog biscuits,
immediately the students stopped
eating and commented that the taste
was unpleasant. This experiment
proved an important point. People are
influenced by words.
A sentence, therefore, must contain a subject and
predicate.

A subject can be simple, a single noun or a

pronoun, or complex, which includes modifiers that
provide more details about the simple subject. The
simple predicate is the verb in the sentence. The
complex predicate includes modifiers that complete
the meaning of the verb.

Try reading number 1 without stopping at the

pauses. You will get very little meaning from it. Try
reading number 1 without stopping at the periods. You
will have much difficulty getting any meaning.
A sentence begins with a capital letter and ends
with a punctuation mark.
