WHAT IS A PART OF SPEECH ?
A name given to a word based on its job in a sentence

HOW MANY PARTS OF SPEECH ARE THERE ?


1. VERB
2. NOUN
3. PRONOUN
4. ADJECTIVE
5. ADVERB
6. PREPOSITION
7. CONJUNCTION
8. INTERJECTION
1. VERB
A word that shows an action or state (situation)

FOR EXAMPLE:

• Andi plays football two times a week. (physical action)

• I am a teacher. (to be-state/situation)

2. NOUN
A name given to a person, place, animal, thing, feeling, or idea.

FOR EXAMPLE:

Budi went to Bali on vacation with his family last year.


3. PRONOUN
A word that replaces a noun

FOR EXAMPLE

Randi is at the movies with Randi’s friends.


Randi really enjoys spending time with Randi’s friends.

Randi is at the movies with his friends.


He really enjoys spending time with them.

I, you, they, he, she, it me, you, us, them, him, her, it

Possessive pronoun Reflexive pronoun


Mine,yours, his,her myself,yourself,himself,herself
4. ADJECTIVE
A word that gives us information about a noun/pronoun

FOR EXAMPLE:

They drive an amazing big red sports car

Q: What is your opinion of the car? A: Amazing


Q: What size is the car? A: Big
Q: What color is the car? A: Red
Q: What type of car is it? A: Sports

Articles(a,an,the) also adjective

You generally find them before nouns and pronouns


I bought 5 nice, big, old, blue,
Quantity (articles/number) Shape (round)
Quality (good/bad) Colour (red/yellow) Javanese, leather chairs for you.
Size (big/small) Origin (where?)
Age (old/young) Material (wood)
5. ADVERB
A word that gives us information about a verb, adjective, adverb

Adverbs answer questions like When? Why? How? In what way? etc.

FOR EXAMPLE:

Yesterday evening, we walked somewhat slowly in a very beautiful garden

Yesterday evening walked (verb)


Slowly walked (verb)
Somewhat slowly (adverb)
Very beautiful (adj)
6. PREPOSITION
Show relationships in time, place, and position

Preposition are words like in, on, at, by, from, with,
before, and after 8. INTERJECTION

FOR EXAMPLE: Interjection are words that have no real meaning but they help us to
show sudden emotion or exclamation.
I’ll see you at the office on Monday.
For Example: Wow! Argh! Ouch! Oops! Hey! Hi!
7. CONJUNCTION
Help to connect ideas.

Conjunction are words like and, but, or, so, and


because.

FOR EXAMPLE: I didn’t go to campus today because I don’t feel very well.

Budi and Andi are best friends I don’t feel very well today so I didn’t go to campus.
