WHAT IS FILIPINO PSYCHOLOGY?

SIKOLOHIYANG PILIPINO
FATHER OF SIKOLOHIYANG PILIPINO

• Virgilio G. Enriquez, also known as Doc E, was

a social psychologist and the Father of Filipino
psychology "Ama ng Sikolohiyang Pilipino".

• He was born on November 24, 1942 at Santol,

Balagtas formally Bigaa, Bulacan. He was the
youngest of 5 children to Arsenio Libiran
Enriquez and Rosario Galvez Gaspar.

• He is the founder of the Pambansang Samahan sa

Sikolohiyang Pilipino, (corporate name: National
Association for Sikolohiyang Pilipino, Inc.).
BASIC PRINCIPLE OF SIKOLOHIYANG PILIPINO

Is to foster national identity and

consciousness, social involvement, and
psychology of language and culture. It is
thus concerned with proper applications to
health, agriculture, art, mass
media, religion, and other spheres of
people's daily life.
WHAT IS ENRIQUEZ’S GOAL OR FOCUS OF
SIKOLOHIYANG PILIPINO?

Emphases on identity and national consciousness, social

awareness and involvement, psychology of language and
culture, and applications and bases in field like health
practices, agriculture, art, mass media, and religion -- to
develop a psychology based on the experience, ideas and
orientation of both elite and non-elite Filipinos, using
methods of investigation that are culturally appropriate
and culturally sensitive
CORE VALUES
PAKIKIPAGKAPWA (SHARED IDENTITY)

It is connecting ourselves with others, feeling

ourselves in the others and having a sense of shared
identity and a shared inner self. That sense of having a
common human identity, community and destiny lies
deep in our psyche. It’s the translation in our
particular culture and history of a universal truth that
tells us to treat others the way we ourselves want to be
treated because at our innermost core we have a
shared humanity.
PAKIKIRAMDAM
(SENSITIVITY OR SHARED INNER PERCEPTION

It is described as an all-important “shared inner perception”

that compliments the “shared identity” of kapwa. It is an
emotional a priori that goes with the Filipino personhood.
Pakiramdam operates behind all Filipino values. This steering
emotion triggers the spontaneous voluntary actions that come
with the sharing of the self. It is the keen deep inner feeling
that initiates all deeds.
It is like knowing when to join a group or
how to blend in with people. Pakiramdam
provides the tacit leads how to act
appropriately in such situations and may well
be regarded as the cognitive style of Filipinos
a unique social skill that is intrinsic to the
Filipinos personhood.
KAGANDAHANG-LOOB (SHARED HUMANITY)

It refers to being able to help other people in dire

need due to a perception of being together as a
part of one Filipino humanity. It is a Filipino
value that would nudge a person towards genuine
acts of generosity; towards a nurturing that has
its origin in genuine feeling for others.
ACTIVITY 2
• List 20 cultures and practices of Filipino.
• Identify if it is kinagisnang sikolohiya or
katutubong sikolohiya
