SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING

PARALLELOGRAMS, TRAPEZOIDS,
AND KITE
LESSON 4 (3rd Quarter)
At the end of the lesson, the student should be
able to:

solve problems involving parallelograms,

trapezoid, and kite.
Determine the theorem
applicable to
parallelograms, isosceles
trapezoids or kites.
Opposite sides are parallel
and congruent.

parallelogram
Diagonals form an
equilateral triangle

parallelogram
Its median is parallel to each base and
its length is one half the sum of the
lengths of the bases

trapezoid
Corresponding angles are
supplementary

parallelogram
Opposite angles are
supplementary

trapezoid
One pair of opposite angles
are congruent

kite
Opposite angles are
congruent

parallelogram
Diagonals are congruent

trapezoid
Its area is half the product of the
lengths of its diagonals

kite
Diagonals bisects each
other

parallelogram
A B
Example 1:
x 82
Find the measure ofin
parallelogram ABCD
82 98
D C
Note: in parallelogram,
opposite angles are congruent.
A B
Example 2:
Find the measure ofin 3x 11 - x
parallelogram ABCD:

75 x+70
D C

Note: find the value of x first

= 110-x
75-110= -x
-35 = -x
x=35
Example 1: A 5x+38 B
Find the perimeter of
parallelogram ABCD
16cm 24 - x

D C
x+70

16=24-X 16 = 24-x 5x+38 = x+70

16-24=-X BC = 24-8 5(8)+38 = 8+70 P= 188cm
-8=-X BC =16cm 78cm =78cm
x=8
A B
Example 1:
Find the value of x & y in 2x+3y
parallelogram ABCD
13cm 24 - x
x+71
D C

2x+3y = x+71
13 = 24-x
A D ≅ BC 13-24 = -x
2(11)+3y = 11+71
22+3y = 82
-11 = -x
3y = 82-22
m ∠ B ≅ m ∠D 11 = x
3y = 60

y = 20
Characteristics of a trapezoid
The base angles of an isosceles trapezoid are
congruent.
Opposite Angles of an isosceles trapezoid are
supplementary.
The diagonals of an isosceles trapezoid are
congruent
The median of a trapezoid is parallel to each base and its
length is one half the sum of the lengths of the bases.
P A
Example 2:

Find the value of x of an isosceles

trapezoid PART
3x+10 5x-30
T R

10+30 = 5x-3x
40 = 2x
P A
Example 2:
Supposed that the value of x is 20 in an
isosceles trapezoid PART, find the
measure of 3x+10 5x-30
T R

10+30 = 5x-3x
40 = 2x
P 3y+8 A
Example 2:

Find the value of y & bases of an 24

isosceles trapezoid PART

T 5y R
m

m
24
24 = 3y+8 = 5y
24= 4y+4 = 3(5)+8 = 5(5)
24-4=4y = 15+8 = 25
20=4y = 23
5=y
Characteristics of a kite

In a kite, the perpendicular bisector of at least

one diagonal is the other diagonal.

The area of a kite is half the product of the

lengths of its diagonals.

One pair of opposite angles are congruent.
