Coastal erosion
It is the process by the
which the shoreline of a
coastal area is gradually
worn away and reshaped
by the action of natural
forces, such as waves,
currents tides and wind
Sea walls
Sea walls are construction
structure made of concrete,
masonry or sheet piles. It is built
parallel to the shores at the
transition between the beach
and the mainland or dune to
protect the inland area against.
Types of sea walls
Curved concrete sea wall

It is the walls that redirect wave

energy. It prevent waves reflection
and provide better protection
against erosion
Vertical sea walls
Vertical sea wall
It is a straight, vertical
walls made of concrete or
rock. Vertical sea walls are
mostly used in area with
high wave energy and
erosion
Revetment sea wall
Revetments sea walls

It a slope structure made of rock

and concrete. It absorb waves
energy and prevent erosion
History on sea walls of
various countries
United state
Due to the erosion it was necessary to
construct Galveston sea walls in Texas. Which
was completed on July 29th, 1904. It is a
concrete sea wall which is 3.3miles long, 16
feet at its base , 5 feet width on the top and 17
feet in height. It is also located at the south-
central closer to the west coast and 560km
long coastline on the gulf of Mexico. Several
coastal states including Florida, new York and
Louisiana construct against storm surges
Asia
North as a country in Asia have tired
very hard to innovate coastal defense by
longest and biggest sea walls in the
world called saemangeum sea walls. It
was completed on April 27th, 2010. It is
located on the southwest of Korean
peninsula with the length of 33.9km.

Advantages of sea walls
1.Erosion control
It prevent coastal erosion, protecting
infrastructure and property from damage
2.Flood protection
Sea walls reduce the risk of flooding during
storms and high tides
3.stabilization
It provides stability to coastal bluffs and
cliffs, preventing landslides.
4 Recreation
Sea walls often doubles as promenades,
Disadvantages of sea wall
1. High cost
The construction and maintenance can be expensive,
especially for large- scale projects
2.Ecosystem impact
The alters natural coastal processes and habitats, affecting
marine life and ecosystem
3.Waves reflection
It may leads to increased erosion in adjacent areas due to
wave reflection.
4. Limited lifespan
The sea wall may require frequent repairs and have a limited
lifespan against powerful storms
5.When the sea water hits the sea walls, it causes the area to
move inland, forming a steeped appearance that eventually
