Student-Centered Goal
Setting
In Math
Math Pre-Assessment Considerations
● Have next grade’s standards pre-assessed (vertical learning
progressions) (acceleration)

● Have more content than you would normally plan to teach at the
start of the unit on the pre-assessment (compacting)

● Grade 4 Number and Operations Pre-Assessment

Students Identifying Goals
● After the pre-assessment
○ Chunk the pre-assessment?
Tracking Goals
● Flexible Groupings
○ “We are doing ____ (goal) at ____ (time)
○ STUDENTS->KNOW YOUR GOALS!!!

● Quizzes/Exit Tickets
○ Mark off goals as the unit moves along
Tracking Goals
● + model for tracking by students

● Conference checklist
Partner Teaching Protocol
● Identify a goal to work on (write on post-it note)
● Mark 3 post-its of people you can help
● Pair up based on initialed post-its
● 20 min per person to work (one turn as expert, one as learner)
○ Ideas- IXL, Khan Academy practice, practice on white board
(CHECK on calculator)
○ Focus on their goal
○ Reflection- How do you/they know they improved?
Differentiated Discussions
● Moving from acquisition to making meaning and transfer

● Variations of differentiated discussions

○ Solve #1 before you solve #2
○ Teacher assigns your problem
○ Ss choose your problem (based on goals or work)
Tech Tools to Support Goal Setting
● Khan Academy

● Khan Academy- MAPs

● Grade Level Equivalency Chart (if your county doesn’t use MAPS)

● GoFormative

● IXL
