Understanding Dipole-

Dipole Forces in Chemistry

An Exploration of Intermolecular Forces

STEVEN C. CLAROS
NEA NICOLE T. SUMAYA
Introduction:
- Brief overview of intermolecular forces.
 Intermolecular forces, often abbreviated to IMF, are the attractive and
repulsive forces that arise between the molecules of a substance. These
forces mediate the interactions between individual molecules of a
substance. Intermolecular forces are responsible for most of the physical
and chemical properties of matter.
- Definition of dipole-dipole forces.
 Dipole-dipole forces are attractive forces between the positive end of
one polar molecule and the negative end of another polar molecule.

 Dispersion forces are formed between neighboring
molecules of permanent dipoles.
 The more electronegative atoms have partial negative
charge while the opposite end has a partial positive
charge.
Dipole-Dipole Forces Explained
• Molecules with permanent dipoles are polar molecules. Polar molecules
have uneven sharing of electrons and the electronegativity difference
between the atoms is greater than 0.4.
