WHAT ARE NOUNS?
Nouns are naming words.
They name people, places and objects.
They can also name ideas, emotions,
qualities and activities.

some examples of nouns:


Kristine, Joy, driver, sister, friend,
Philippines, Japan, pen, dog, money,
love, beauty, industry, nature, greed, pain.
Types of Nouns

Common
Proper
Abstract
Concrete
Collective
Possessive
Common Noun

refers to common name of people or


things

Examples:
country, bridge, town, month, cup, art,
paper, work, frog, bicycle, atom,
family,
Proper Noun

proper name of a particular person,


thing, or place

Examples:
Philippines, Monday, December, Ms.
Kristine, Earth
Concrete Noun

refers to a person and to tangible


objects

Examples:
buildings, plates, coffee, machines, glass,
grass,
Concrete Nouns have
Sight, Touch, Hear, Smell, Taste

Leaves- Touch Disturbance- Hear

Sour- Taste

Stench- Smell
Smoke- Sight
Abstract Noun

it can be an idea, characteristics or


qualities or condition that cannot be seen or
touched

Examples:
love, courage, patience, wisdom, sincerity,
hope
Collective Noun

it describes a thing or group of things


that can be singular or plural in form

Examples:
audience, crowd, family, government, team,
colony, flock, box, committee
Possessive Noun

these refer to words that name the


person who owns something or who has the
possession of something

Examples:
committee’s decision, Family’s building
Rules in Forming Possessive Noun

Rule 1: add (s) to a singular noun


Examples:
project – projects
daughter – daughter’s
Ms. Kristine – Ms. Kristine’s
Rules in Forming Possessive Noun

Rule 2: if plural nouns end in (s) just add


an apostrophe (‘) after (s)
Examples:
machines – machines’
tools – tools’

Rule 3: In a joint possession, use the


possessive form to the nouns closest to the
words owned.
Examples:
Ms. Kristine and Ms. Joy’s project
proposal…

Rules on How to Pluralize some Nouns
Singular Rule Plural

boy, girl Add -s boys, girls

echo, hero Add –s to a few -o endings echoes, heroes

box, church Add –es to -s, -sh,-ch, -x, -z boxes, churches


endings
melody, fly Change –y to –i and add -es to melodies, flies
–y endings.
monkey, day If a vowel comes before the -y, monkeys, days
add –s.
thief, half Change –f to –v, add –es to thieves, halves
most.
roof, cuff Add –s to a few –f endings roofs, cuffs
corn, tuna, fish Same spelling corn, tuna, fish

woman, foot Irregular plural forms women, feet
