Module Orientation
Information Literacy – “a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the
ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information” (Gross & Latham, 2009:338).
Digital Literacy - an understanding of common ICT terminology; the ability to use basic features of software tools
such as word-processors and spreadsheets; and the ability to save data, copy and paste, manage files, and use of search
engines and databases, and the ability to make more advanced use of software tools (Buckingham, 2006:23-24)
Module Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
adapt better to university life;
illustrate academic listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills appropriate in an academic environment –
note this outcome and the one above are embedded in the academic orientation course
avoid plagiarism by responsibly and ethically referencing from academic sources;
demonstrate a higher level of competence and confidence in academic language use;
exhibit practical knowledge in using technological resources whilst applying basic computer skills in academic
activities.
adapt to challenges and employ the required skills to thrive in the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) work
environment.

Assessments
• All assessments are compulsory
• SCOR is a continuous assessment module – NO EXAM
• You need an average of 50% to pass SCOR
• All literacies in the module will be assessed simultaneously
• Supplementary assessment requirements:
(if a student does not achieve a minimum of 50%)
• Students must have achieved 40% – 49% as a final average.
• Students must have attempted all assessments.
