Advances of nanotechnology in

operative dentistry
?What is it
?Why
?How would be used
.Conclusion
Nanotechnology is one of the most popular •
areas of current researches and has developed
in multible desciplines . there are 4 main
types of
materials(metals,polymers,ceramics,composit)
all these materials are developed for practical
. applications in health care
In our dental field we are interested in nanomatrials because •
more problems we faced in recent materials such as amalgam
restorations and conventional composit and glass ionomer. 1.
Amalgam restorations ,although its good mechanical
properties ,it has dis.such as mercury toxicity , esthetic
considerations and pigmentation of surrounding gingiva along
time. 2. Composit although its esthetic consren , it is very
sensitive and its mechanical properties less than amalgam .
3.glass ionomer.although its biocombatiblity,chemical bond
to tooth structure and fluoride release ,it is poor
esthetic, weak bond strength and compromised mechanical
.properties
Recently nano syntyetic materials is ideal enough to respond •
to external stimuli,so they are possible options to make smart
materials that can replace lost dental hard tissue such as
(material synthesis,biomemitic approach,tissue engineering)
Nanotechnology have been applied for manufacturing of nano •
composit ,nano glassionomer,nanobonding system,endo
)sealer ,nanoceramics,nanopolishing system
nanocomposite.1 •
Nanocomposites are available as nanofills (1 to 100 nm size) •
and nanohybrids (0.4 to 5 μm) (6). Nanofiller particles are
available either as nanomeric particles or nanoclusters. This
composition solve some issues like polymerization
shrinkage ,microhardnes ,wear resistane and achieve patient
.satisfactions.increasing nano fillers enhance transulency
nanoglassionomer .2 •
Nanotechnology has been applied to resin modified •
glassionomer in the form of nanomers which enhace esthetic of
final restorations and polishibility. It has led to the
improvement of setting reaction, Improvement in poly salt
bridge formation, Better bonding with dentin and More
nano bonding system.3 •
application of nano-particles in dentin bonding •
agents have shown to improve tubular penetration
andn sealant system can cause caries
prevention. The nano-sealants provide wear
. resistance and a reduced shrinkage
nanocoating system.4 •
To provide highly esthetic and glossy surface to •
composit and acrylic indirect
composit,nanofilled,light cured preparation are
used to coat composit restorations
nanopolishing system.5 •
Polishing of dental surfaces is a known practice in dentistry which is •
used to make it difficult for plaque and cariogenic bacteria to
accumulate on tooth surfaces. Thus, polishing is a preventive
procedure used as a primary defense against dental problems.
Micron-sized silica particles are a typical component of conventional
polishing pastes. The smaller the abrasive particle size the smoother
.the polished surface
nanoceramics.6 •
With the integration of nanotechnology and ceramics a new •
CAD/CAM block of monolithic esthetic material was developed as
Lava Ultimate (3M ESPE). It is a mix of nano particles arranged in
clusters and individual bonded nano particles embedded in a highly
cross-linked polymer matrix. The main advantage of this material
is said to be the easier clinical finishing and polishing, without the
need for a porcelain oven, with the strength, surface gloss and
finish retention similar to ceramic materials which has been the
.Conclusion •
No available dental materials with ideal properities for any
dental applications.we hope that nanomaterials in either
developing new materials or significant improvement of
existing materials.nanotechnology will enhance the quality of
.patient life
