Hypoglycemia in

piglets
Author: Br. Virginia Esther Mairena Robleto

Teacher: Lic. Nitza Gallego

Introduction
Hypoglycaemia is a syndrome characterised by
reduced blood glucose levels. Piglets are highly
susceptible to this metabolic disorder, which leads
to death if the predisposing factors are not
controlled. In addition to causing death, the
production costs due to hypoglycaemia in a pig
unit can be significant enough to make the farm
economically unviable
Objective
● General Objetive
To Explain the hypoglycemia in piglets

● Specific Objetive
To point out the different pathologies in sows about to give birth through differential diagnosis.

To adapt the treatment indicated for hypoglycaemia in piglets and its rapid action in order to reduce
costs in pig production.

To become aware of the different actions in piglet care and management to improve pig production.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis is inmediate, it’s made by
means of a rapids glucosa level
Treatment
Quantity. Solution. Via. Frequency.

15ml. Glucose Intraperitone Every 4/6

5% . al. hrs.

5ml. Glucose Per Os. Every hour.

Ringer's
solution 5%.
Conclusions
It has to be taken into account that neonatal mortality in piglets is
an economic and welfare problem. In the first days after farrowing
it ranges between 11 - 12%. This indicator is a clear expression of
welfare, not only because the animals that die have failed to adapt,
but also because of the high losses in a given environment.

Effective gluconeogenesis does not develop until seven days

after birth; it is likely that, during this period, blood glucose is
depleted, which is unstable and dependent on the dietary
source.
