Directions: Match the tools

needed to do the task in
Column A with the objects in
Column B. Write your answer
on a separate sheet of paper.
What can you say about
the picture?
How do you think did the
ancient people build this
church?
Hundreds of years ago, when churches, houses, and
many structures were built in many places in the Philippines
and all over the world, no sophisticated machineries were
used. These structures were built only with the help of
simple machines. Simple machines served as practical
solutions to our ancestor’s daily struggles before. These
were not meant to replace or eliminate work; instead, they
were made to make work easier and faster. For example,
moving a heavy object a long time ago was a burden to our
ancestors; thus, men thought of ways on how tolessen this
difficulty. With the help of machines, tasks are done faster
and with ease.
In the field of Physics, a simple machine is
any of several devices with no moving parts that
are used to modify motion and force in order to
perform work. There are six basic types of simple
machines, lever, wheel and axle, inclined plane,
pulley, wedge and screw. Simple
machines help people do their work
easier and faster. It multiplies force and
speed and changes the direction of
the force applied.
Activity 1: Simple Machines in Action
Simple machines are tools that we
use every day in school, at the park, and
at home. These tools make our work
easier and faster. In this activity, you
will learn how to use these simple
machines and be able to identify their
characteristics and uses.
Instructions:
1. Study the materials provided by the teacher
such as tweezers, scissors, stairs, doorknob,
knife, bolt, pulley, broom, nail cutter, and faucet.
2. Manipulate each tool. Caution: Be careful with
sharp objects. Have your parents supervise you
when performing this task. Observe and analyze
their characteristics and uses.
Answer the following by
choosing the correct
characteristic and use of each
simple machine. Write the
letter of your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.

What are the

characteristics of each
type of simple
machines?
Identify what kind of simple machines the
drawing are.
The lever is a rigid bar that is free to
rotate about a point called fulcrum.
Levers are used to push, lift, and pull
things. Examples of lever are hammers,
tweezers, seesaw, shovel, can openers,
scissors, and tongs.
A lever has different parts: fulcrum,
resistance or load, and effort.
Fulcrum (F) is the point on which a
lever rests or is supported, and on
which it pivots.
Resistance (R) or Load is the
force that is being lifted by effort.
Effort (E) is the force that lifts the
resistance.
Lever has also its classes The classes of
lever are as follows:
First Class Lever (RFE or EFR) For this
class of lever, the fulcrum is between the
effort and the resistance (load).
Second Class Lever (FRE or
ERF) For this class of lever, the
fulcrum lies at one end; the
effort is applied at the other
end while the load is in the
middle.
Third Class Lever (REF or FER) For this
class of lever, the fulcrum is at one end, but
the load is at the other end, and the effort is
applied in the middle.
The inclined plane is a simple machine
that has a sloping flat surface with one
end raised higher than the other end. It is
used to lift heavy objects. It lessens the
effort exerted in transporting weight over a
distance and height. Ramp used by
workers in loading heavy objects onto
trucks is an example of inclined plane.
The wedge is a double
inclined plane that is
sharpened to an end.
Wedges are usually used
for cutting and piercing.
Example of this are axe,
chisel, nail, needle, can
opener, and other devices
with sharp edges.
Activity 1: LEVERS UP!
Directions: Identify what class of lever the
tool represents. Write your answer on a

easier way to lift the barrel
onto the truck? Why?
2. In which picture is the
man using less effort? Why?
Activity 3: WHAT A WEDGE!

Directions: Identify each wedge

and explain how it is used. Write
your answers on a separate
sheet of paper.
Directions: Complete the table by listing down
the examples of lever, wedge, and inclined
plane.

Match the Column A
with Column B. Write
your answer on a
separate sheet of
paper.
Can you imagine using
these activities without
the help of machines?
A machine is a tool
that makes work
requires less of your
efforts.
For example, it is easier to raise
a heavy rock using a crowbar
than lifting it.
Likewise, it is easier to raise and
lower the flag using a pulley than
going up and down the flagpole.
Pulley
Have you seen your school flag being
raised before? This is possible with a
simple pulley. When you pull down the
rope, the pulley turns and the flag
goes up. Pulleys change the
direction of the force.
A pulley is simply a wheel with a groove in it and a
rope in the groove. It is also called a drum or a
sheave. The groove is important because it helps
to keep the rope in place. It is used to lift up or
lower heavy objects. With a pulley, an object to be
lifted can be tied to one end of the rope, and a force
is applied to the other end by pulling the rope
downwards. The downward force turns the wheel
with the rope and pulls the load upwards at the
other end.
Types of Pulleys
There are three types of
pulleys: (1) fixed pulley,
(2) movable pulley, and
(3) compound pulley
system. Each pulley
system depends on how
the wheel and rope are
put together.
Wheel and Axle
This simple machine involves two circular objects
— a larger disc and a smaller cylinder, both joined
at the center. The larger disc is called the wheel,
and the smaller cylindrical object or rod is referred
to as the axle. Sometimes, there may be two
wheels attached to both ends of the axle. A wheel
alone or an axle alone is not a simple machine.
They need to be joined to be called a simple
machine.
Activity 1: Fix Me!
Directions: Unscramble the letters to form words
about simple machines.
Discovering Simple Machines
Directions: Fill in the table with the needed
information. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.
Activity 3- Color My World!
Instructions: Copy the drawing
on a separate sheet of paper.
Then, color the object pulley
green, the wheel and axle blue,
and the screw red.
Complete the table with the needed
information.
Directions: Choose the type of simple
machine that is appropriate for each task.
Write the letter of your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.
