Mixtures

Mixtures
A mixture is a material that is made
up of two more chemical compounds
or substances that do not combine
together chemically.
2 types of mixtures
Heterogeneous mixtures Homogeneous mixtures
 All components of  Components cannot
the mixture are be distinguished from
visible because they each other, appear as
one substance
do not mix together  Particles distributed
 Particles not evenly throughout
distributed evenly
EX: air, salt water, 10
EX: trail mix, karat gold
vegetable soup,
oil and water
2 KINDS OF MIXTURES:
HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES
DO NOT APPEAR THE “SAME”
THROUGHOUT

“LEAST MIXED”

PARTICLES ARE LARGE ENOUGH TO BE

SEEN
HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURES
Appear to be the same throughout

“Well Mixed”

Particles are very small--can’t be

seen
SOLUTIONS
• A type of homogeneous mixture
formed when one substance
dissolves in another

• “Best Mixed” of all mixtures

• SOLUTE: The substance that is dissolved
in a solution

• SOLVENT: The substance that does

the dissolving in a solution
–Water is the most common solvent
–Water is the “UNIVERSAL SOLVENT”,
since it can dissolve many substances

CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER
Check the appropriate cat
On a separate sheet of paper, identify if the image
represents a pure substance or mixture.
Background Information
Pure substance: Composed of one type of
element or compound, cannot be separated
physically
● Element: Composed of 1 type of atom
● Compound: Composed of 2 or more
elements
Mixture: Composed of various elements
and/or compounds that can be physically
separated
● Homogeneous: The same
throughout
● Heterogeneous: Varied throughout
Examples
Pure Substances
● Element: Al, H₂
●Compound: H₂O
Mixtures
● Homogeneous:
Lemonade, Salt
water
● Heterogeneous:
Pizza, Trail mix

1. In the first column determine if the material is a pure substance or mixture.

2. In the second column, if the material was a Pure Substance identify if it is an element
or compound. If the material was a mixture, determine if it is homogeneous or
heterogeneous.
